The Demise Of The Twinkie: Hostess Files Motion To Liquidate

The Demise Of The Twinkie: Hostess Files Motion To Liquidate

By Tom Gara

And that’s that: Hostess Brands, maker of Twinkies, Wonder Bread and more, announced this morning it has filed a motion with bankruptcy court to start liquidating the company immediately. A huge number of jobs are soon to be lost.

“Hostess Brands will move promptly to lay off most of its 18,500-member workforce,” said CEO Gregory F. Rayburn in the statement, “and focus on selling its assets to the highest bidders.”

In a letter posted on a new site set up to communicate with employees and suppliers through the liquidation process, Mr. Rayburn pinned the blame on its striking union:

Despite everyone’s considerable efforts to move Hostess out of its restructuring, when we began implementing the Company’s last, best and final offer, the Bakers Union chose to stage a crippling strike. This affected Hostess’ ability to continue to make products and service its customers’ needs and pushed Hostess into a Wind Down scenario. As a result, we are forced to proceed with an orderly wind down and sale of our operations and assets. We deeply regret taking this action. But we simply cannot continue to operate without the ability to produce or deliver our products.

There’s no way to soften the fact that this will hurt every Hostess Brands employee. All Hostess Brands employees will eventually lose their jobs – some sooner than others. Unfortunately, because we are in bankruptcy, there are severe limits on the assistance the Company can offer you at this time.

How will I survive without my Hostess fruit pie in the early morning?

If there's an Aldi store in your area, their fruit pies are fantastic.

Not quite..it’s the board of the Baker’s Union that authorized the strike..there was NO strike vote taken..The Teamster’s Union wants the Bakers Union to hold a ..get this..SECRET BALLOT vote to see if they want to return to work..

Unbelievable...... The corruption, and stupidity continues to amaze me.

Build 3 brand new facilities in North Texas, East Texas and West Texas. Create new logistics. Ship product from there.

If the unions do not allow the products in the state, too bad.

"I wonder how many of them will have to let people go now too? All because one union decided it would rather destroy the company than work with them."

Nothing unusual. GM was sole sourcing their break linings from a plant in Flint MI. Flint had GM and Delphi left. The UAW decided to put the screws to GM over some BS stamping equipment issue and chose the Flint plant to do it. They shut down most of GM and their suppliers for a long time, GM finally caved, then eventually shut down the few plants left. If you think Detroit is a hell hole, take a drive through Flint (I'd recommend body armor).

As long as you pay people to do nothing, that's what they're going to do.

My first paying job, working for a contractor building a house one summer, I asked the boss why the carpenters, roofers, electricians and the high paying workers bitched so much about their jobs, when my buddy and I, both high schoolers working a summer job, were happy as clams doing a job we were getting paid for, even though we were doing all the grunt work.

He told me that the better a person had it, the more they bitched and the more they expected extra benefits. He said, and I believe this to be true, that if you paid a man to come to work every day and just sit under a shade tree and drink beer eventually the guy would start bitching because he had a tree at home he could sit under so why did he have to come all the way to the job to sit under their tree.

This points out the mentality of the entitlement class, the world owes them a living and a good deal more.

Eastern used to be a big airline. Unions killed it. Frank Borman actually offered to sell the company to the unions. The unions balked, and then proceeded to completely destroy the company from within. The union pilots who had just accepted a new contract decided to violate that newly-signed contract by going on strike to support another union. The airlines went belly up shortly afterwards.

Interesting picture, I never knew Eastern flew 747’s. I flew Eastern a lot in the late 70’s and early 80’s and flew on L1011’s. I never saw an Eastern 747, I didn’t think they had many routes that were long flights.

The union rejected the court's bankruptcy decision to let Hostess cut salaries to save the plant and the union went on strike to close their own plant and kill all their own jobs.

Hahahahaha. Now the union guys will have no turkey on Thanksgiving and no toys for their kids this Christmas. Hahahahahahahahahahaha. Ignorant goofballs!

I agree. And they will be whining on TV and about how broke they are.

Ever notice that no matter how high the unions force up wages and benefits, you lay them off for a couple of weeks and they are all broke?

At $25-30 an hour you’d think they’d learn the concept of saving.

Oh wait, they are stupid unionized Democrats.
