I don’t know what he expected quite frankly. The only they championed him in the first place is because he supposedly shared some of their goals and he was a useful idiot.
The liberals are thrilled that he supports Iran’s mullahs and nukes and hates Israel. They’re just upset that he didn’t do a good job hiding it today.
He was put up there to show how bi-partisan they are. In addition, should some dirt crop up, they can throw him under the bus in an instant.
