Curiosity Rover discovers conditions suited for ancient life on Mars

NASA is reporting that an analysis of a rock powder sample collected by the Curiosity rover suggests that ancient Mars could have supported living microbes.

The sample contained traces of sulfur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus, and carbon -- key chemical ingredients for life.

For astronomers, the news constitutes the latest clue in their pursuit of a scientific holy grail: Answering the big question about whether life ever existed on the Red Planet. Their challenge until now has been to confirm whether the Martian atmosphere could have supported a habitable environment. The preliminary evidence now suggests the answer is yes...

Why wouldn't these elements be available at numerous sites throughout the universe? I wouldn't expect less.

It's like finding DNA in humans....kinda like duh....we all have DNA

If there was past life on Mars, then I would expect to see direct evidence of it in pretty much any rock or soil sample they dig up.

So, let’s send some tundra-tolerant plants up and get them started. Then after a few years we can send up the EPA to regulate the plants to make sure they don’t grow.

The presence of clay as well as the absence of "abundant salt" point to the likely existence of an ancient environment where there was fresh water, according to NASA.

Sounds to me like grounds for the EPA to claim this as navigable water, and subject to the whims of EPA.

They act is if they are trying to prove that elements contained within the periodic table of elements are not unique to the Earth.

Just a comparison on what to expect on Mars: From 3.8 billion years ago to 1 billion years, single cell life forms were all there was with fossilized stromatolites being the most easily recognizable and not to be confused with chemical/ geologic structures in the rock. They are still arguing about the possible fossils found in meteors composed of pieces of Mars.
