Across the West, early miners digging for gold, silver and copper had no idea that one day something else very valuable would be buried in the piles of dirt and rocks they tossed aside.
There's a rush in the U.S. to find key components of cellphones, televisions, weapons systems, wind turbines, MRI machines and the regenerative brakes in hybrid cars, and old mine tailings piles just might be the answer. They may contain a group of versatile minerals the periodic table called rare earth elements.
"Uncle Sam could be sitting on a gold mine," said Larry Meinert, director of the mineral resource program for the U.S. Geological Survey in Reston, Va.

All we have to do first is to drive the EPA off a cliff.
Quick! Get the EPA on this! It must be stopped!
Yep, the EPA will be all over this even though they’ll be going after these metals in previous tailings.
Gee, where are some of the world’s largest deposits of REE?
In Afghanistan.
Convenient, huh?
The EPA killed rare earth mining in this country. It is a stupid as that. Here is a PDF comparing U.S. production and world production from the years 1900 to 2011.

Kill the EPA.
These are ELEMENTS. With the exception of #61 (Promethium , which has no stable isotope) you don't destroy them with chemical reactions. Only NUCLEAR reactions have enough energy to do that.
“Uncle Sam... Gold Mine”. If so, Uncle Sam’s “team” will once again execute their famous “reverse Midas” play.
Yep, and hopefully Molycorp Inc. will expand their operations from Mountain Pass in these other areas, they’ve fought a hard battle there.
Is this article suggesting that American should rush to landfills to dig around for rare earth minerals?
We are becoming third world.
“Uncle Sam could be sitting on a gold mine,”
A rare earth mine, actually. Perhaps, in a depleted gold mine, according to the article. Things get confusing, when you use metaphors, where they could be mistaken for literal speech.
Uncle Sam isn’t sitting on jack in the west. He’ll get a $100/year claim maintenance fee and some other associated fees, but PEOPLE get the wealth by prospecting and staking claims...
Not landfills but mine tailings.
I don’t think the EPA is going to be too happy
with folks digging up tailings and bringing
any mercury to the surface,
Almost a history topic. :’)
