componding the narrow canyons are debris “dams. in a flood situation these dams are created by all the debris and can be 10-12 feet high. of course they are unstable so they give way letting loose a 10-12 foot high torrent of water
I assume he has to be "asked" to provide relief by the governor before he can provide federal help.
It's been a couple days of terrible destruction, yet I haven't heard a word about such a scenario. Have I missed something?

remeber unaccounted for DOES NOT MEAN MISSING. it means no one has been able to contact them. any number of reasons including no powewr, dead cell phones, they are on vacation and the neighbors didn’t know, they evacuated quickly and haven’t been able to contact anyone. i have a firnd who lives in the area and dropped him an email. he is out of state on vacation.
They are calling it a 500 to 1000 year event. There are floods in drainage plains, but very rare to have everyone affected at once.
they have reported the Big Thompson was higher this time than when it flooded in 1976, killing 150 or so.
this time add in boulder creek, south boulder creek, four mile creek, clear creek, left hand , St vrain, platte, and poudre.
Thanks for writing that, I WAS thinking of people missing as possibly ‘harmed’ or worse.
Or the side of a mountain. Or in the plains, as much damage has occurred well east of these canyons

Hearing today that the road leading into big elk meadows is gone (between Lyons and Estes park). Also, the small creek in the canyon has made a new path. This is where a small dam failed Wednesday night/Thursday. They will have to be airlifted out.
The drive through the canyon is so breathtaking. We love to rent a cabin on the Cache la Poudre River then go up to Chamber Lake. We saw the most beautiful moose up there. I wonder if those cabins are still ok.
Well, the rain has stopped for now. I have to travel to Colorado Springs in two weeks where there are no excuses for not being there. I could rent a helecopter if necessary. I don’t think that any roads except for the route that adds an hour each way (3.5 hours each way) will be open for months. Better than living in a Gated Community with the regulation street walkers watching you! May be a hotel dweller.
Coal Creek Canyon is also a mess. Probably months to get the roads rebuilt.

We got flooded in Tulsa, OK back on Memorial Day back in 1976. It was a one in one hundred year flood.
Nine years later, Tulsa was again hit on the same day, another one in one hundred year flood.
