I understand how the Richter scale works.

But an increase from 5 to 5.3 or 8 to 8.3 is not 30% is it?

If the scale is logarithmic, an 8.3 is three times as powerful as an 8.

You are correct...it’s not 30% more powerful. It is 3x more powerful, or (gasp) a 300% increase.

It just “seems” to be too much, but you are correct.
