The earthquake struck 609 km beneath the Sea of Okhotsk on 24 May this year, and is seen as 30% larger than its nearest rival, a 1994 earthquake 637 km beneath Bolivia

The Sea of Okhotsk quake released three times as much energy as the 1994 Bolivia earthquake

30% larger = 3x the energy? How does this work, exactly?

If "Larger" is not "energy released", then what is it?

The Richter scale is logarithmic. The difference between a 5 and a 6 is not 1x, it is 10x. The difference between a 5 and a 7 is not 2x. It is 100x.

So a .3 increase in the size is 3x.
