Man, 61, dies in officer-involved shooting (over a code violation [in Statesboro, GA])
Statesboro Herald ^ | October 28, 2013 | Jeff Harrison

Posted on 10/29/2013 9:39:21 AM PDT by Eagle Bomba

"No officers were injured during the shooting," Samples said, but "we did have one officer receive a minor injury, not related to the gunfire."

Though police were guarded with details surrounding the case, eyewitnesses claim the shootout was prompted by a code enforcement operation involving an old, rusted and inoperable van owned by Pryor.

Witnesses say a Statesboro Code Compliance officer reported to Pryor's home to seize the van, which has sat idle in the yard for several years.

"He has had the van forever. They have been asking for years for him to move it. He signed some papers, went back into the house, and then all of a sudden everything happened," Roberts said. "The van had a lot of sentimental value for him. He wanted to get it fixed." A tow truck, with the van loaded, was still on the scene hours after the shooting.

The city's Code Compliance department, under the umbrella of Planning and Development, is responsible for "ensuring that the city's physical environment is maintained through the enforcement of codes related to building and property maintenance, sanitation, zoning, etc.," according to the city of Statesboro website. "Code compliance staff is responsible for investigating complaints which may often be categorized as ‘nuisances' including: vacant and dilapidated buildings, overgrown vegetation, front yard parking, abandoned vehicles, litter, etc. The activities of code compliance staff are intended to improve the community's standard of living and enhance property values throughout the city."

Samples said he could neither confirm nor deny the witness accounts, or release the names and job statuses of officers involved in the shooting.

I complain about liberals all the time and yet no one comes to take them away.

It was his property. If it was blocking someone else from using their property, creating an actual safety hazard, or some other direct infringement... You’d have a point.

As it is, you are supporting Socialism. The notion that your neighbors can use law enforcement to get you to go along with their collective desires. Backed up under threat of death from law enforcement.

Just so we’re clear.

He was not shot over a code violation. He was shot because he started shooting at the police.

And if the Jews had not complied with the Nazi's and fought back,
history would tell a different story. Now the next soldier of the state
who goes out to cause an infraction on liberty,
will be much more hesitant.

The Gestapo needs to realize that we're Americans first and will die for our freedoms.

“He was shot because he started shooting at the police. “

He had to shoot at them. They were going to take his junky-ass van he’d been ignoring foreever.

That made no sense whatsoever. So the Jews could have avoided the Holocaust if they had shot at the police for a code violation?

Those remaining near the scene described tense moments, and a shootout sparked by Pryor.

"(Pryor) was on the porch. He went inside, came back out and started shooting. I heard two shots from him. "(Police) took off and began shooting back," said Rose Roberts, a resident of nearby Institute Street. Roberts said she ducked for cover under a house when shots rang out. "After about the third shot, he went down. It was unreal. All of a sudden, everything went wrong."

He shot at the police. The police shot back. Their aim was better. Hardly a surprising turn of events given that.

But that's the thing. We don't know if the rusting bucket of perhaps jagged metal sitting open in his yeard was dangerous or not.

Seriously though, I believe in compromise when it comes to neighborhood safety. Could he have moved the van? Was it near a spot where kids played often? The article fails to give the nature of the complaints. Just that there were complaints over a number of years.

This action proves that if they come for our guns, many will die. And the
Gestapo don't have enough people to die for the cause. Not nearly enough.

You don’t mess with blight or parking violators,, just blow ‘em away, and tow what’s left over away.

An old man leaving a hunk of rusting metal out on your lawn, being asked to move it for YEARS, not being a reasonable person and moving the van, and shooting at a tow truck and police is akin to the Nazi's and what they did to the Jews.

Thanks for not insulting the Jews, though.

I believe in compromise when it comes to neighborhood safety.

That is apparent.

I have rural acreage. I have a "junky old car" sitting out back. It looks like hell because I haven't had the cash to work on it the last few years. While the body needs work, I have over $10k invested in the engine, transmission, and suspension. It'll do 10.5/143 on a 1/4 mile.

It'd probably be a code violation in George's neighborhood.

One you are ok with them sending armed officers to enforce a "code" against.

That's Socialism. No matter how you try to spin it.

From tiny shoots do mighty oaks grow.

Nip it now, or don’t lament when it falls on you later.

I have to agree. If you shoot at the police (or anybody for that matter) you should probably not be surprised if they shoot back.

So you don’t think the police would have retaliated against the Jews?

I don't see your 10-second car, that actually runs, the same as I would see a rusted out van in the same spot for years totally neglected. But I'm not acting with full info. I'd like to see a pic of the van as well as the history of complaints lodged by the neighborhood.

But if your neighbors made a reasonable request of you to move your vehicle (due to a child safety issue or something similar) would you at least consider it?

Seems that the certain officer involved will not want to do another confiscation after this.
And who knows what his fellow officers think.

I also didn't read about the property owners day in court. No day in court.
Instead, they sent out a thug to take his property with an armed escort to
kill the man if he fought back. He fought back.
