[T]he object [was] an asteroid 17 to 20 metres across ... with a mass of 10,000 tones [and] exploded at an altitude of about 30 kilometres. The initial explosion carried an energy equivalent to about 500 kilotonnes of TNT.
The explosion of the object caused] flying glass, which injured more than a thousand people and collapsed one building. Of 374 injured people who responded to an internet survey ..., the most common complaint related to eyes 180 people said their eyes hurt and 70 were temporarily blinded. But 20 also reported sunburn; one was burned so badly that his skin peeled.
[Peter Jenniskens, the leader of one investigation, noted that] "... snow is very efficient at scattering UV light."

The meteorite clearly showed that colloquial russian has a phrase which can be roughly translated as “Holy crap, what was that?!!!”.
Now this is some downright SCARY stuff. A rogue meteor sneaks up on us, hiding itself with its back to the sun, and going straight for the prize.
Ok, so the folks in Chelyabinsk got a dusting up, and they seem to have survived it quite well, but had that dude did a fly by and clobbered some place really crowed, there would have been body parts flying in every direction!
Just imagine if that dude hit Tokyo, Beijing, Delhi or Rio!
Or any city in the US or Canada.
Who knows when and where the next one will hit? God and God alone. And I think God may be a little PeeOhdd at the condition of the human race right about now.
Time to reconsider how we do things. Just my opinion.
“7. Its parents remain unknown”
I demand a paternity test!
it’ll either be muslim (suicide meteorite) or african.
“itll either be muslim (suicide meteorite) or african.”
It seems, through scientific discovery, that we are closing in on the galaxy of origination of the current president.
I can imagine it hitting Washington DC.
You can see me smiling all the way from there can't you?
” the most common complaint related to eyes 180 people said their eyes hurt and 70 were temporarily blinded”
I believe that is how the movie “The Day of the Triffids” began. Everyone in the world went blind and these giant Sunflowers started to attack people. =)
Stop that! You’re just trying to get me all excited. Don’t be such a tease.
LOL,
Huu Boi!
If we could only hope and pray.
And if it would come calling, when ALL of congress was in session.....
You couldn’t wipe that smile off my face for ten years.
After English and Chinese, Russians have some of the most COLORFUL language on the planet!
I don't know, but I been told......
“Now this is some downright SCARY stuff. “
Scary indeed! I figure that meteor followed the track that an incoming ICBM fired from North America would have taken. Fortunately the Russians did not immediately conclude it was a dud ICBM and fire everything they had at the USA. If this had happened in February 1963, four months after the Cuban Missile Crisis, we would not be here!
DO you remember when the movie Independence Day was in the theaters, and people cheered when the White House was destroyed. I think that should have been a bit of a warning to the powers that be.
Never go to the movies but I believe you. That movie came out in 1996... nobody got the message or they have forgotten it.

The earth is a pretty small target, relevantly, and this was just a glancing blow with no impact.
If the trajectory puppy was coming straight down and impacted prior to burning up in downtown where-ever...........
Here... you might enjoy this.
