Sending scores of armed agents along with helicopters and dogs to confront an elderly Nevada rancher over grazing fees may seem like overkill, but critics say its not inconsistent with the federal governments recent approach to environmental enforcement.
The simmering truce between the Bundys and the Bureau of Land Management comes after high-profile raids last year by armed federal agents on small-time gold miners in tiny Chicken, Alaska, and guitar makers at the Gibson Guitar facilities in Tennessee.
That doesnt include more subtle threats, such as recent efforts by the Obama administration to raise grazing fees or pressure permit holders to transfer their water rights as a condition of renewal, said Ryan Yates, director of congressional relations for the American Farm Bureau.
Some have called it a culture of intimidation, Mr. Yates said. Its issue after issue, threat after threat. Its becoming harder and harder to keep those operations in business.
The atmosphere was quiet but tense Tuesday at the Bundy ranch near Bunkerville, Nev., just days after Bureau of Land Management chief Neil Kornze pulled federal agents off the property and returned about 400 head of cattle to rancher Cliven Bundy.
A BLM spokesman said the agency would work to resolve the dispute administratively and judicially, but so far Bundy supporters arent buying it. Patrols of armed supporters remained at the ranch on the lookout for the return of BLM agents, instead of heeding calls from lawmakers to disband and return home, according to KLAS-TV in Las Vegas.
That may be in part because Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid warned Monday that its not over.
Meanwhile, former Rep. Ron Paul, Texas Republican, told Fox News he worried the federal government could hit back hard at the Bundy ranch.

So true, Jim.
My sources say some of those on patrol are Oath Keepers. Retired Special Forces types. BLM wannabe thugcops will get chewed to dirt if they cross those boys. Unlike the BLM thugs, they are ALL cattle. No hat required.
Then they would send the one out, well provisioned, to tell the tale.
“Obama administrations Culture of intimidation seen in Nevada ranch standoff”
So they feel real bold picking on couple American ranchers...but I don’t see that same “culture of intimidation” when it comes Putin, hummmm, I wonder why.
*crickets*
Because they are stupid, inflated by hubris, they think they can get away with it.
Bill Clinton even called Barry a Chicago thug.
Did they do any different vis-a-vis intimidation with park rangers and barrycades during the 15% government shutdown?
1. Leave your cell phone turned on and plugged in...at home. Stop by the local Wally World and buy as many Waqlkie-Talkies as you can afford, with extra batteries. Do so with the big wad of cash you removed (or, ideally have stashed in the gun safe). 2. While Walkie Talkies are easily listened to, it's not anywhere on the scale that has been built by the feds for cell phones. Keep transmissions to 10 seconds or less.
3. Drive to the site, using only cash along the way...in your old hunting truck. Not the new one full of computers and transmitters.
SURPRISE!
Obama reserves his real hate and anger for Americans.
He gets tough with law abiding citizens but is a cream puff on the world stage.
5. Get up on the hillsides...as stealthily as possible in daylight. Take a space blanket to cover yourself at night, because at night you are a helpless target. Cover all ingress and egress roads.
6. Tell nobody what your plans are unless you've known them for more than 20 years and trust them with your life.
Do not initiate fire unless the firing has already begun nearby.
I agree. We are interpreting a strategic retreat from a superior force as a victory, when it was at best a reconnaissance to determine what will be needed to defeat the enemy.
Why is the effing Fed.gov so concerned with keeping AMERICANS off public land, if they don’t care how many MEXICANS get in? Why don’t they send the BLM to guard the Southern border???
The most import thing to have happen in the Bundy case will be to INSURE that Dirty Harry no longer controls ANYTHING. He needs to be permanently put out to pasture.
We all know he rigged the election the last time by intimidating “union” workers, forcing them to vote for him, and that he would do so again. The man is corrupt and power hungry. Get enough people behind Clevis Bundy and maybe even the union workers would support Bundy and “out” Reid.
In all honesty, I was hoping a few of the front line BLMers would get killed. Its about time the American people started literally fighting back against federal tyranny. It would only take a few occurrences before people in the IRS, EPA, BLM and other agencies stopped to think about carrying the water for the anti-American liberals of this country.
Wake up, America. How will you eat if there are no farmers, ranchers, and other food producers? That’s the direction we are headed. Agenda 21 demands it.
Your rooftop gardens are not enough for everyone in the city. Your garden at home is not enough for your small town. What do you think will happen when you are the only grower of food in your neighborhood?
Once there are no more independent growers and producers, how will you justify feeding your children GMOs from Monsanto? Will you be comfortable with that? Will you comfortable with yeast compounds, soy, and other substitutes for real food?
The real issue is that the culture of intimidation is pushing real food producers out of business. Better stand with Bundy and the others now.
They’ll think twice if the first time they go to “intimidating” someone again, a half dozen red lazer spots appear on their chest and head.
concerning #1.
Motorola DTR and repurposed Nextel phones operating in Direct Connect mode are best.
Because Democrats are convinced that illegals will vote Democrat—and now, they know that ranchers will vote Republican—or Tea Party.
IMO, the Tea Party has been given a great platform on a silver platter.
