The European Left's candidate for the European Commission presidency, Alexis Tsipras, Friday called for the immediate release of Sinn Fein leader Gerry Adams who is been held for questioning in connection with the 1972 murder of Jean McConville. Tsipras called the arrest a "politically inflammatory act against democracy".

Not surprising that a hard lefty would rush to the defense of another hard lefty.

Europe’s Choice: Leftist candidate Alexis Tsipras takes quest for a New Deal to Brussels | April 14, 2014 | SPECIAL REPORTS reporter
For the first time in European parliamentary elections political groups have already chosen their candidates to head the EU Commission, which will be elected once the new parliament is in place.

In this edition of Reporter we take a look at the candidate of the European Left group, Alexis Tsipras, who leads the radical left Greek opposition party, Syriza.

Born and raised in Athens, Tsipras is no stranger to politics. At the age of 17, as a member of the Communist youth party, he led student sit-ins and blockades in the early 1990s against education reforms.

Extremely private about his personal life, he has been with his girlfriend since high school and they have two sons.

Little known outside Greece, just two years ago, Tsipras shot to political fame when Syriza won the second highest number of votes in the 2012 elections... However, unable to form a government, Tsipras is now head of the Greek opposition and a tireless campaigner to end austerity. But can he succeed?

Killing snitches isn’t part of the Democratic process — is it?

If it has “Party” before “process”, yes.

It's been a long time coming -- I have to think that new evidence or testimony about that notorious murder became available.

Had an Irishman tell me years ago after the barriers came down at the No Ireland checkpoint and I had hitchiked a ride with him to Belfast.....”Don’t let anyone tell ya’ that The Troubles are over.”. He was adamant about that. That has always stuck with me.

As long as an unprosecuted criminal gang rules by fear, the troubles will never be over. The “modern” troubles are over a century old, with “truces” from time to time (in the muzzie world, those are “hudna”), but the “troubles” are not that much different than the continuous internecine warfare documented as long ago as the entry of the Normans (invited over by a Cavanaugh, I think, who needed some extra armed men to take on a rival petty king).

Leftists defending their own.

Gerry Adams and the entire IRA are slimy, but what really disgusts me is that this was a Marxist movement that latched onto a nationalist movement and got the supporters of the latter to believe that they were one and the same.

I’m not in favor of nationalist movements either, because they’re virtually always bitter and flaky and violent, trying to achieve through violence what could be achieved through negotiation. But the radical left has been very effective in taking them over and making them even more evil.

The IRA is such a movement, as is ETA.

Time for these people to just get out of the closet and admit their Marxism, but you know they never will.

Libya, at the time, was also helping the IRA smuggle plastic explosives into NI. One of the fave ports was near Castleford (IR)....just south of Newry (NI).

Some of these groups are leftists because the right has sided with their enemy (as was the case with the Vietnamese nationalists - Ho Chi Minh was present at the Versailles peace conference in 1919 and thought they would get independence, and came away empty-handed).

Well put.

There were two branches of the IRA, the Official IRA (straight Marxists) and the Provisional IRA (or ‘Provos’) who ran their rivals right out of business. The Provos had (or perhaps still have) an inner committee of a dozen or fewer which would determine what violence, murders, and threats would be used to dispose of rivals; this included rivals within the Provos, some of whom were killed, some of whom fled, mostly to the US. Provos trained with Islamofascist terrorists in Libya and elsewhere, and conducted both random acts of public terror (like the Omagh bombing) or terrorized specific victims (threats, kneecapping) just like the criminal gang that they are.

Well as long as they are prosecuting Adams, perhaps they can prosecute those in the British intelligence involved in the pub shooting in Loughinisland, Northern Ireland during the 94 World Cup.

The leadership of the European Union laughs at this petty sectarianism. Do the dividing at the local level while they conquer at the “supranational” level.

So if the Official IRA were straight Marxists, were the Provos gay Marxists? Don’t forget that Bobby Sands was a Provo and thoroughly Marxist.
I was only a working-class boy from a Nationalist ghetto, but it is repression that creates the revolutionary spirit of freedom. I shall not settle until I achieve liberation of my country, until Ireland becomes a sovereign, independent socialist republic.
