Computer experts and Republican lawmakers are poking holes in IRS claims that the agency did all it could to retrieve embattled ex-official Lois Lerner's allegedly "lost" emails, which the agency blames on a 2011 hard-drive crash.
The email revelation already has prompted three congressional hearings -- with more likely to come -- as lawmakers grow more skeptical of the explanation and look for inconsistencies in the story. Among them, they point to a flurry of emails from mid-2011 between Lerner and the agency's information technology team about the alleged computer failure which was attached to the agency's mea culpa delivered to Congress earlier this month.
IRS Commissioner John Koskinen, in testimony on Capitol Hill this week, cited those emails as proof of the hard drive crash.
But Lerner's communications with the agency's IT team referred to her desire to retrieve "lost personal files" -- not lost emails.

If one of us yokels pulled a similar stunt wouldn't the federal government go to the Internet provider and demand copies of our emails that they store on their hard drives?
The IRS did all they can to restore the emails... except of course using the actual backup tapes that contained the data.
Excuse me for being ignorant, but emails can’t be lost on a computer, I don’t think. I send from one computer, but if I access another computer and put my info in, I can still get all the emails I sent.
Also, anyone she sent them to would have the emails in their files, also.

computer crashes don’t wipe emails from your hard disk. The only way an email could get destroyed on your hard disk if you run a strong magnet across it

The real question to me is why she moved the email to her local disk in the first place. I don’t buy that the server placed a hard limit on her that she reached. If she had, she could have gotten rid of junk first. Cat pictures, for example.
Microsoft Exchange Server immediately deletes email that is moved to a PST file, whether that file is on a local computer disk, or on a network store. It does not leave a copy in the “Deleted Items Folder”.
It’s not common for agencies to backup each user’s local drives. They should be using network storage, which is backed up. But IT offices are lazy and don’t set up a user’s Windows environment to do that automatically through caching.
The IT department should be constantly backing up the Microsoft Exchange data store. I’m sure they did. They also claim to reuse tapes every 60 days. I have a hard time believing that.
Bottom line to me is that Lois Lerner wanted those emails off of the server and copied them to her local disk. She did not want them accessible by IT administrators. She may have indeed lost that local disk. My gut says she has a copy of those PST files elsewhere.
Koskinen admits ALL of Lois Lerner's e-mails were available on a back-up tape but were not extracted and saved because it was too much trouble.
The IRS had the emails and knew the Committee wanted them at the time. They even stated they would go to "extraordinary" lengths to get them.
