Actually I thought George Bush the Elder pissed away a number of opportunities to build a good relationship with Russia, although I’ll admit it would have been tough for other reasons, mainly that the country was run by a drunk, Boris Yeltsin.

With our invasion, we dethroned Saddam and destroyed his Sunni Baathist regime. And today the Islamic State, a barbaric offshoot of al-Qaida, controls Mosul, Anbar and the Sunni third of Iraq.

He left out a few steps in between.

That he did. But at least he didn't openly set out to antagonize them by siding with Muslims against their kinfolk.

And, yes, Yeltsin might have been a drunk (a description which fits about 70% of the male Russian population), but at least he wasn't anti-American.
