As prices fall at the pump, some U.S. lawmakers eye gas tax hike

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - As U.S. gasoline prices plunge to the lowest level in more than five years, some U.S. lawmakers see a golden opportunity to bump up taxes at the pump to help pay for the repair of crumbling roads and bridges.

Fuel taxes have been flat for more than 20 years, starving the Highway Trust Fund of revenue used for rising infrastructure repair costs. Lawmakers have fueled the fund with last-minute short-term injections of cash, but want to find a more permanent fix.

Last July, before a similar deadline, Republican Senator Bob Corker of Tennessee and Democrat Chris Murphy of Connecticut proposed raising federal gasoline and diesel taxes by 12 cents a gallon over two years from the current 18.4 cents.

The idea failed to take hold, for the same reason similar proposals failed in the past: the idea of raising taxes on consumers has been anathema to lawmakers on both sides of the aisle, particularly for conservatives who have signed pledges not to hike taxes.

Republican Senator Jim Inhofe, the new chairman of the Senate Environment Committee, said on Wednesday a gasoline tax, or "user fee," as he prefers to call it, was one of the measures "on the table" as his panel works on a new transportation bill this year.

But Inhofe stopped short of supporting such a fee. ..

Your plan sounds very reasonable.... I’d like to see BO’s response.

How twisted is this? The fed’s cut is still the same even though prices are lower. They just want to milk the cash cow even more.

The fact that Inhofe would euphemistically call a gas tax a “user fee” tells you all you need to know about today’s RINO Party.

Any opportunity for the Parasites in Washington to transfer more money from the workers’ accounts to their own will be seized.

The prices are low because the Saudi’s (sunni muslims) are trying to destroy Iran (shiite muslims). The Iranians need the price of oil to be about $135.00 per barrel to make their budget for the year. The Saudi’s are trying to destroy them by lower oil prices. Eventually, one way or the other, it is going back up to $3.50 - $3.75 per gallon. A new 12-18 cents will put that further up for people to afford. Stinking socialists will do any stinking thing they can to get into your pocket book. They never met a tax they could not engage with like sex. They lust for taxes like sex. Stinking pigs. Dimocrats and Rinocrats are not different. One and the same. Crooks and fools. Obamanites galore.

Political folks in both parties and every level of government are trying harder to gnaw every last bit of carrion from the bones of the remains of the private sector and even from their own lower-echelons. Knocking down property taxes, fees and other local, yocal ripoffs is a more urgent issue.

Get in there you communists of both parties and raise the tax on gas. Go ahead and commit rape once again. Then when the gas at the pump goes sky high, once again, these rotten bunch of criminal greedy jackasses will not reduce the tax. Americans are the biggest bunch of poor thinkers that the Country is finished.

Shovel ready jobs, right?

Jay Carney got the only shovel ready job that the Obama administration had to offer.

Bastards. And when gas goes up again, will they drop the tax?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

That's a good one.

Yeah, that makes sense.

Raise the taxes to pay for roads and bridges that nobody will be able to afford to drive on once gas goes back up.

Food will further go up to cover the increases.

People that work 29hr a week jobs at a lower wages won’t see the worth in paying so much to travel to and from work.

I could see instituting a tariff on imported oil to keep our fracking producers viable and that is about it.
