"having hit a critical mass of states that have recognized same-sex marriage..." Mr Obama said

Huh? Actually, there's more states that have banned gay marriage than those that have approved it. I count 16 that have specifically allowed it, 30 that specifically are 1man/1woman, and 4 that are 1man/1woman by statute but not Constitution. Federal judiciary tyranny doesn't count as a pro-homo state!

States that Approve:

Via popular vote:
- Maryland. (By legislation first, then pop vote.)
- Maine. (By legislation, then overturned by pop vote in 2009, then pop vote approving it in 2012.)
- Washington. (By legislation, then referendum by pop vote approves.)

Via State legislatures, no popular vote:
- Vermont. (legislature overrides veto by gov.)
- New Hampshire. (Bill passed in 2010, repeal in 2012 fails.)
- New York.
- Delaware.
- Rhode Island.
- Minnesota. (Voters reject a Const. amendment defining as 1man/1woman by 51%, then legislature passes gay marriage.)
- Hawaii. ('98, voters approve Const. amend allowing the legislature to ban gay marriage, Leg does. In 2013 Leg reverses and allows it. )
- Illinois.

Via courts:
- Massachusetts. (State SC rules ban is unConst.)
- Connecticut. (State SC rules gays can wed.)
- Iowa. (State SC overturns law banning gay marriage.)
- New Jersey. (Leg bill vetoed, then state judge says it's legal. State SC declines to step in.)
- New Mexico. (No laws either way, but State SC affirms 'right' in 2013)

States that have Const. bans/1man-1woman:

- California. (Prop 22 in 2000 bans gay marriage in state law. Const 1man/1woman [Prop 8] overturned by Federal courts in 2013.)
- Alaska. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Nebraska.
- Nevada. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Arkansas.
- Georgia.
- Kentucky.
- Louisiana.
- Michigan.
- Mississippi.
- Missouri.
- Montana. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- North Dakota.
- Ohio.
- Oklahoma. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Oregon. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Utah. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Kansas. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Texas.
- Alabama. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Colorado. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Idaho. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- South Carolina. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- South Dakota.
- Tennessee.
- Virginia. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Wisconsin. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Arizona. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Florida. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- North Carolina. (Overturned by Fed judge.)

States with statute for 1man/1woman, but no Const. article:

- Wyoming. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Pennsylvania. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- West Virginia. (Overturned by Fed judge.)
- Indiana. (Overturned by Fed judge.)

PEW time line by state <-- Pretty comprehensive.

Nice lists. Here is one from the lowly Wikipedia on when states passed marriage amendments and how much they passed or failed by. It doesn’t have everything like CA’s prop.22 which passed by 61% in 2000 but it has prop. 8 which passed by 52%. So you can see CA lost around 9% on the issue in 8 years, and 2012 North Carolina (61%) was where 2000 CA was on the issue.
