Pitts Jr.: Like or not, I don't like Bill Maher
Miami Herald ^ | March 15, 2015 | Leonard Pitts Jr.

Posted on 03/16/2015 6:18:29 AM PDT by ConservativeStatement

Gigi, a reader in West Palm Beach, Fla., wrote me noting that I agree with the star of HBO’s “Real Time with Bill Maher” on most political issues. Yet I have, on previous occasions in this space, expressed distaste for him. “I just don’t understand,” wrote Gigi, “why you profess to dislike someone who is so like-minded. It baffles me.”

Me, I don’t see the contradiction. To whatever admittedly imperfect degree you can judge character from a television performance, I find Maher smarmy, self-satisfied, condescending and just plain nasty. Besides which, his use of coarse, sexist vulgarisms to describe Sarah Palin and of an offensive term to describe her special-needs child a few years ago strike me as far beyond the pale, whether as comedy or as political analysis.

Her bafflement tracks with the findings of a 2014 Pew Research Center study. It found that partisan animosity has increased significantly in the past 20 years, the right moving further right, the left, further left, with the result that people now largely prefer to make their lives in echo chambers where their beliefs reverberate without challenge.

That would be because of the Left's never-ending use of Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals #5: "Ridicule is man's most potent weapon."

The Left doesn't bother making rational arguments. They just call people names.

You can't really have any meaningful interaction with them.

“I find Maher smarmy, self-satisfied, condescending and just plain nasty.”

And I find Leonard Pitts Jr smarmy, self-satisfied, condescending and just plain nasty.
So Pitts off!

He’s probably only saying this now because of Maher finally targeting Islam.

This may the first time ever that I’ve agreed with Pitts. Not on the Maher thing specifically (although I agree with that too) but on the larger point he was making that it’s entirely possible to not like personally someone you agree with on everything if the person is just an unlikable person, for example, an arrogant, condescending, puffed up, self righteous jerk. Also, it’s easily possible to like someone very much who disagrees with you on most things if they are a likable person of character. The fact so many libs can’t conceive of such a thing is what gets me seeing jack boots and Gestapo hats coming at me in my dreams.

Maher has a rotten mind and a rotten mouth, a s**t-stirrer, not worth watching. He needs to be thrashed to give him a fear of God and a respect for others. Then he will start to be like the rest of us.

It is a common strategy for liberals to pretend to be reasonable and say “why can’t we just get along” when what they really mean is “why can’t you just agree with me”.

Holy smokes. I agree with Pitts on something, for all the exact same reasons. I find Maher to be a nasty, venal man with a black heart.

...it’s easily possible to like someone very much who disagrees with you on most things if they are a likable person of character.

That "character" thing disqualifies most liberals-socialists-progressives-communists-Marxists (but, I repeat myself).

Interesting...here's a black journalist (not a journalist who is black) who writes almost exclusively about matters than affect black people. Black 24/7. And anyone who disagrees with Pitts about matters he deems blackworthy is called a racist.

Sure, Maher is an enormous jerk. But I don't think Pitts realizes how he comes off when he calls everybody who doesn't share his opinions racists.

And he says he'd rather get drenched then share a shelter with certain conservatives. I think he's more afraid of having to argue his beliefs with somebody who doesn't share them.

Isn't Maher the spitting image and likeness of George Sanders who played the acerbic theater critic Addison DeWitt in the film All About Eve?
