Electricians? Found a buried plastic bottle with liquid, attached to electrical wires.

Posted on 06/10/2015 6:02:04 PM PDT by Toespi

Very weird. We were doing some yard work this evening and hit something, as we dug further we found an old clear plastic bottle with liquid in it. We tried to dig it out and it wouldn't budge, as we went further we realized it was attached to two electrical wires in the ground.. Any idea what this could be?

You don’t live in Washington, D.C., do you?

Seriously? Because the people across the street were transferred right when they finished building the stand alone condo so they rented it in about 2003. The people who rented it ran a meth lab out of it. Big huge police raid and bust when it happened. This just keeps getting funnier.

If it is older than me then it would be a 1/2 inch wide, sort of flat black single pair buried wire.

That looks like a butt splice in a peewee closure, that’s what we called it when I worked for the phone co.

It could be a shake and seal splice.

A ground wire most likely. Though why they would attempt to waterproof it is beyond me.

Cathodic protection, likely as well.

Correct, However the principle is the same, a battery type unit to produce a small electrical charge. In your example, anodes, the bag being berried is the Ground, In the case of a plastic bottle one lead is the ground. The principle is still the same, the tool is different.

That is not a direct buried rectifier (URD). The closest would be a KIRK Cell and those are never buried.

I have seen phone company landline copper splices inside what looks like a 2 liter pop bottle (waterproofing).

Don’t let EPA find out about this.

Too late.

NSA already told them.

My guess is it’s a way to tell when the water table either rises or falls to a specific level. When it rises, the wires make a circuit through the water and a light or a meter shows a circuit is complete. When it falls the water falls and the circuit is broken and the light goes out or the meter shows it is not complete. Then it is time to water the lawn. . . or the tree.
