While almost the entire Republican presidential field wasted no time unloading on New York billionaire Donald Trump last weekend for saying that Sen. John McCain, a Vietnam war POW, was not a hero, Sen. Ted Cruz took his time.
Cruz finally said that McCain, a Republican senator from Arizona, was a hero and a friend, but that Trump was a friend, too.
Why the double-speak?
Cruz, say political observers, sees his anti-Washington message aligning with Trumps especially on immigration and is looking to inherit those voters, after what most experts believe will be the businessmans inevitable departure from the race.
Cruz is trying to plant his flag as the leader in being anti-Washington, said Dave Carney, a veteran political strategist who is not aligned with any 2016 presidential campaign. Thats part of his winning coalition, he thinks.
Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., even tweeted Monday that Cruz was looking for Trumps leftovers.
There's something unseemly about Cruz following Trump around like a lost puppy, hoping to get his leftovers when he finally flames out, said McCaskill....

Awwww...the unnamed “political observers”
Unseemly hell. I love it when a plan comes together.
Claire McCaskill?? Hahahahaha!
Wasn’t she the one who fed on her dead husband’s corpse to get to DC?
She wasn’t the first and she won’t be the last.
I think Cruz, a very good man, is in a fine position to be Trump’s Veep; and then give us an additional 8 years of sanity and prosperity after Trump’s two terms.
16 years or a justice of the SCOTUS.
“Sen. Claire McCaskill, D-Mo., even tweeted Monday that Cruz was looking for Trumps leftovers.

Also, Clair-bear needs to be careful with the term “unseemly.” Seems she has had a little “unseemly” behavior in her life experience.
Inherit Trump’s voters?
Fodder for dividing conservatives against each other. Clever. NOT.
How subtle. We’re getting worked over to see if we’ll give.
No....he’s still alive but everything else about her is true. Nasty woman.
Well for Cruz to get any traction, he will have to somehow get the Trump votes or he will stay at 5 percent for the rest of the primary. He also needs to make sure he doesn’t fall anymore. Cruz is currently in 8th place and has been for a long time now. He falls anymore and he won’t make debates.
She’s an amature on political strategy.
I think my theory is more accurate.
Cruz does not really like McCain as much as he said he does. Cruz is playing the incident and McCain for a better fight later...when it really matters.
Same for his treatment of Trump.
From last night when some freepers were criticising Cruz for praising McCain as a hero:
McCains terrible stuff (complicity in treason ) is going to come under attack by Ted Cruz later on down the campaign trail...and, his praising of McCain right now will only strengthen his case.
Cruz is setting this up as his strategy, he aims to fight the establishment for the nomination and he is removing personal attacks on McCain so that ulterior motives are not in question when arguing actual party policy in the coming year.
We all know McCain is the enemy and so does Ted Cruz.
Ted Cruz is a politician, a very brilliant one.
I don’t dispute that, naps. You are right.
I just would rather McClatchy stay out of what we already know. They very well know that Cruz supporters are VERY impressed with Trump and that it causes strain between other Cruz supporters who are a little rattled about it.
“Ted Cruz is a politician, a very brilliant one.”
That might be why he isn’t taking McCain on.
Cruz probably knows that McCain is seven straight with no losses, in getting elected to Congress. The last challenger from the right got his ass handed to him 56% to 32% in the primary.
So yes, if Cruz is brilliant, there are better fights to engage in.
I just hope Cruz doesn’t pace himself out of the debates.
He’s way down in the polls, as we have seen so many times in the past, it is very important in the presidential race to peak at the right time.
What is that right time? I dunno.
He is staying away from media games right now and nobody really wants to interview him because all they get is frustration because he plays everyone like a well aged fiddle.
Your first mistake is believing these polls have any relevancy right now.
Yes,
Thanks for the wake up slap.
They are relevant in that they show and have shown for a good bit bit now that Cruz hurt himself significantly and has lost support as a result.
His votes on TPA were not smart. I still support Cruz, and I have chosen not to hold those votes against him, but it’s quite clear that many others chose otherwise.
No, that was a Carnahan. MO knows how to pick ‘em.
