Former president Bill Clinton had a private telephone conversation in late spring with Donald Trump at the same time that the billionaire investor and reality-television star was nearing a decision to run for the White House, according to associates of both men.
Four Trump allies and one Clinton associate familiar with the exchange said that Clinton encouraged Trumps efforts to play a larger role in the Republican Party and offered his own views of the political landscape.
Clintons personal office in New York confirmed that the call occurred in late May, but an aide to Clinton said the 2016 race was never specifically discussed and that it was only a casual chat.
The talk with Clinton the spouse of the Democratic presidential front-runner and one of his partys preeminent political strategists came just weeks before Trump jumped into the GOP race and surged to the front of the crowded Republican field.
The revelation of the call comes as many Republicans have begun criticizing Trump for his ties to Democrats, including past financial donations to the Clintons and their charitable foundation.
Trump took the call from his office in Trump Tower in New York, according to the four allies, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak publicly. The call came as Trump was making a final decision about whether to run, and he was candid about his political ambitions and his potential interest in seeking the White House during the talk, these allies said.
The 42nd president listened intently and then analyzed Trumps prospects and his desire to rouse the GOP base, the Trump allies said.
The tone of the call was informal and Clinton never urged Trump to run, the four people said.

Sounds like Bill doesn’t want another Clinton presidency.
People at the top of society talk to each other? Who knew?
I do not think Bubba thought Trump would go off so hard on Hillary’s EMails. Be careful what you wish for, it could bite you in the arse.
I don’t see a problem with this.
The Bush family is good friends with the Clintons, I think this is worse for Bush then talking on the phone.
How about if Trump confirms this to start.
Oh this is The Smoking Gun. It’s over. Don’t you Trumpsters look foolish now. Yada. Yada. Yada.
BILL: So Don, You're going to say and do this and that, leaving the Republican Party all split and divided, then when no further damage can be done, run as a 3rd party candiate leaving Hillary an open door to the White House?
DONALD: Yep.
BILL: I love you, man.
At first, I was a little worried when I read that Trump had conferred with Bill Clinton, but I had second thoughts. It’s not that surprising that the very powerful and infulential would speak. Trump may have considered this a ‘courtesy call’ to two people he has worked with in the past.
Someone Trump may not have called before his launch could be Reince Preibus, who never seems to be at the center of any eventful party related circumstance until after its been done. I can almost gurrantee Trump did not call Karl Rove, ‘the so-called Architect.
What is this? A reverse Operation Chaos?
They may plan to repeat the Perot scam. Perot pulled out, but then came back in after the Dems pulled a dirty trick which Perot thought came from the Republicans. Maybe the plan is to do the same to get Trump to run as an independent.
Besides “Don’t worry, I’ve got your back,” what did His Trumpness say to the Slickster?
The only shot Hillary has left to avoid complete crash & burn is for someone to play the Perot spoiler role. Trump was already a Clinton donor, so this makes perfect sense.
Wonder what the stock market will do on Friday, after the debate/teevee appearances?
I’m enjoying the fact that Trump is destroying the establishment, right along with the attempts by GOPe/RINO jackboot lickers to destroy him. Y’all are pretty funny.
Hill dropped out before, and she’ll do it again. She’s a proven griffter. Strange how people keep trying to shift the conversation to DT will drop out instead of “when will hill drop out this time?”
That chart has no context whatsoever. If you paid attention, you’d know Trump’s been running for more than 20 days. Newt and Perry never have DT numbers. Not even close.
That’s a great graph.
