TRUMP AND THE REAGAN-BUSH DIVIDE
The American Spectator ^ | August 8, 2015 | Jeffrey Lord

Posted on 08/08/2015 7:40:09 AM PDT by Hojczyk

Among other things, it says that the party of “bold colors” that a triumphant Reagan left in the hands of the GOP Establishment has been, if you will, Bushized. Remade from the winning party of Reagan into a moderate GOP/Establishment-run party of what Reagan disdained as “pale pastels.”

Perpetually timid, endlessly bungling of presidential elections, the 2012 version producing a so-called “autopsy” report that called for even more of what makes the party of GOP moderates a record-setting loser. At the congressional level its leadership campaigns in the style of Reagan’s bold colors — yet once elected governs in the style of Bush-style caution, all too willing to find an excuse not to confront its opposition on issues until the mythical “next time” — a myth because in fact the “next time” never arrives.

In the end, amid the collapse of a supposed “dream ticket” that would have paired Reagan with ex-rival and former president Gerald Ford, with time running out Bush became the fallback choice. Setting in motion the eventual succession in 1988, with Bush campaigning as Reagan’s heir for what was called in the day “Reagan’s third term.”

Except, of course, it wasn’t.

The famous 76 speech where he coined the phrase:

My gosh. This man ...was...a genius.

Bush 1 really screwed the pooch IMHO. If he kept President Reagan’s smaller government momentum going, we would not be where we are now.

I implore everyone to watch that video.

Remember...this is Reagan speaking, off the cuff, with only a few minutes warning, and after narrowly losing the nomination to President Ford.

There is so much to say about this, not the least of which is that he told the world what he was going to do as President, which would of course begin in just four years.

This man...what an incredible specimen of all that is great about America.

It is interesting that the GOPe has been dominated by the Bush Family since before Reagan was elected. Reagan had to choose Bush as a running mate in order to appease the GOPe and keep them from rebelling against his candidacy. When Reagan’s term expired, George HW Bush took the country on a hard left turn and it has been traveling that road ever since.

GWB pretended to be a conservative, but in the end he was as liberal as Bill Clinton.

Here we are 30 years later and the Bushes are still pushing the GOP to the left and selling out the nation to corporatists and illegal aliens.

We need another Reagan. Someone willing to stand up to the GOPe.

Only one man raised his hand when asked if he would not rule out a third party if he didn’t like the GOPe nominee.

Reagan ran against a sitting GOPe President. They never forgave him for that. His own party worked against him at every turn. But he was successful because he was relentless in his determination to make America Great.

The GOP is a wholly owned subsidiary of The Cheap Labor Express.

GOP voters have only been offered amnesty candidates since the last amnesty.

¡Yeb! is the worst one yet.

I disagree with some of the things Bush I did but he was not as liberal of Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton would have never put a Thomas on SCOTUS.

not to belabor the point...but check out that video of Reagan in 76. What does he do? Yes, he acknowledges the greatness of the Republican platform, but he also addresses the millions of democrats and independents who were willing to rally to the cause as he defined it.

For Reagan...it was never about the GOP. It was about America, and American values. Yes, we know the 11th commandment, and that has its place. But we also know that he ran against a sitting incumbent GOPe President in teh primary...and nearly won.

GHWB gave us Souter. GWB gave us John Roberts. So what is the difference?

Why would you say Trump or Cruz. You’ve chosen a liberal and a conservative. I don’t get it.

Reagan was, is, genuinely loved, and respected, as a person. Not as a politician. Unlike b.o., who lied every step of the way to get what he wanted.

There is nothing in common between Reagan and Trump. Jeff Lord, generally an impressive writer, is off his path with such nonsense.

(1) Reagan never advocated for socialized medicine
(2) Reagan never accuse a female of bleeding from wherever
(3) Regan was never a NYC crony capitalist
(4) Reagan would never have gone on Twitter rage rants

And there are so many more difference

Not to defend Trump but McConnell was suppose to be conservative but then blocked any effort to defund planned parenthood.

I’m not sure about Trump. He’s no Reagan that is for sure but arguments made against him, (he’s not a conservative), can’t really hold water when compared to the supposed conservative politicians what were sent to congress, then turned around and nearly gave Obama everything he wanted.
