Better call out the ferries. Having traveled a lot in British Columbia, I was amazed how frequently the road just stops and there’s a ferry. It’s kind of fun, but I was surprised. The same is true in the Yukon. I took a ferry to get from Top of the World Highway and across the Yukon River to Dawson City. That is how I meant it really — enough of the red letter warnings.

It is. The Chinese are actually building the bridge in China, in large pieces. Then the Chinese ship those pieces over here, where they are connected together.
At least that's my understanding of the situation, based on the NY Times article I referenced in post #1.
And I can imagine what the Chinese quality control is like: Make sure everything holds up, at least until the last check clears.

At first I couldn't quite understand your meaning here. But now I've got it. You are correct in that the NY Times article is pro-Chinese. I read it all. The California officials gushed over how great the Chinese bridge was, and how inexpensive it was.
I posted that article to give anyone interested the details on why the Chinese were chosen, and how the bridge was being built. Those details were largely missing from the main article I posted.
In no way did I mean to suggest that going the Chinese route was a good idea. In fact, it's obviously a terrible idea. I thought that was clear from the main article I posted: The support rods are inferior, and will fail long before they are supposed to.
And they were made in Alabama. From the article you posted. Jeepers.

Its not just an engineering failure, it is broad-based fraud.
The recent “testing” of the rods was total fraud.
Also much of the concrete in the foundation failed compression tests long after it was buried.
That bridge is going to be a disaster when a big quake comes.

There was an “unsuitable material” issue when the revetments were being rebuilt during the Clinton regime, and they refused authorization to sub-excavate, so everything was built on crap.
What do you expect of the New York Times now that it’s biggest share holder, 16.8% and rising, is none other than Lebanese-Mexican Billionaire, Carlos Slim of Obama-Tracfone fame. Does this mean that paper is still covered under the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States. Personally, I put that in the same category as same-sex marriage — it’s incomprehensible. Take it to the Supreme Court . . . .
Much of the New Orleans flooding by Katrina resulted from the storm surge coming from Lake Ponchartrian on the outflow canals and overwhelming the levies. There were no flood gates on the lake end of the outflow canals and the lake was essentially an infinite source once the outflow canal wall had been breached.
...and the SOLE reason for building it was the old bridge was unsafe in earthquakes! That and the politicians are addicted to spending our money to build monuments to themselves.
I can say that the Cypress Structure lower deck moved a lot, responding to traffic loads moving along the upper deck. Was caught in a traffic jam and observed a seat-of-pants surging sensation as of riding a boat through light chop. Lots of looking about at the time wondering what was going on.
As it turned out, investigations after the earthquake revealed the re-bar between other structural elements and support pylons weren’t welded together properly. The concrete pour was the only thing constraining movement at the joins.
