In Cleveland, LNG flowed into the sewers, vaporized, mixed with the air and other sewer gases, then exploded in the confined space.

At the Washington facility, a pressurized processing vessel exploded, not the LNG. The explosion did puncture the LNG tank, which did not exploded.

I don’t speak chinese, so I cannot speak to the other.

There is a reason we have used LNG for decades without an LNG tank exploding.

You could puncture it, ignite the vaporizing edge at the air boundary, and it would be a big ball of flame as the heat sped the vaporization and grew to massive size. But it would not be an explosion. Burning vapor is far different than exploding LNG.

Because of the presence of Earth First! and similar “clubs” in NY and NJ.

They aren’t talking about tanks. It’s basically a ship handling facility with a pipe connecting to an existing pipeline. Very little would be above water. So a terrorist could probably damage the valves and make an explosion as the liquid depressurized into a gas cloud, and if the pipeline had appropriate check valves, the remaining gas in the pipeline might burn off as it hisses out as a gas.

Simplified diagram here:

I’m sorry, I misunderstood.

This is an import facility. The tanks of LNG exist on the ships.

I don’t even know why an import facility is being considered, other than the NIMBYs and environMENTALists that won’t let a pipeline in from the Marcellus region.

as the liquid depressurized into a gas cloud By the way, there is no depressurization to go from LNG to gas. The LNG is liquid at basically atmosphere + plus a small amount from natural boil off in the tank.

It takes the addition of heat to vaporize. You cannot liquefy methane with pressure alone. The critical temperature point won't allow that without a large reduction of temperature. It is cheaper to due it by temperature alone.
