A strong earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 6.8 has struck northeastern India, close the city of Imphal in the state of Manipur, seismologists say.

6.8, that’s bigger than Sylmar and Northridge. And my bet is that Indian building codes aren’t remotely as good as California.

It’s pretty remote, east of Bangladesh, near the Burma border. It’s a tribal area, full of outback types, not very modern.

Looks like brick construction. That is almost guaranteed to collapse in an earthquake.
