Leading Republicans unhappily find themselves deep in âprobingâ conversation, asking, âperhaps he wouldnât be so bad,â says veteran strategist and lobbyist Ed Rogers. True, Trump is a wild card, a flamethrower, a man with no known party loyalties and no coherent political principles, a thrice-married casino mogul and reality-TV star, a narcissist and even a demagogue. On the other hand: Biloxi.
As a result, Washington insiders from both parties are now calling around to GOP heavies, asking, âDo you know anybody on Trumpâs campaign? Who is on his foreign-policy team? I need to get to know them fast.â
Republican National Committee chairman Reince Priebus, who entertained a discussion of Stop Trump strategies at a meeting late last year, now consults regularly with the front runner by phone.
Traditional GOP power brokers have long since lost count of the indignities Trump has inflicted on their rites and rituals. Since entering the race in June with a fantastical promise to wall off Americaâs southern border and send the bill to Mexico, Trump has shredded the political rule book, scattering the pieces from his private helicopter. Have mouth, will travel.
The fading power of middlemen is also visible in less garish manifestations than the Trump campaign. For example, voters used to judge candidates in part on their record of government service. Not anymore.
In that case, party insiders may be forced to decide whether to pull every trick in the rule book to keep Trump from the nomination, with all the havoc that would ensueâincluding a very real chance that the party could split in two. Faced with that prospect, they may decide instead to swallow hard and follow Trumpâs glowing blond nimbus into battle this fall.
Donald Trump will be happy to tell them.

I broke down and spent $40 for the hardcopy and digital editions plus access to the archives for one year. Why? Because of this article. I heard that it was fair and balanced and thorough.
Guess what? It is.
I can't post the whole thing, but I can post a little bit of it, as I don't want to get Jim in trouble. But let's give these people a chance, as I want to be on top of everything they say, and Donald Trump is high on the article too, which means more will come!!!!!!
THE ARTICLE IS GREAT!!!!!
I will buy the magazine issue. I can not force myself to subscribe to TIME. But on the flip side, let them see the bump in sales. Show them what happens when they do honest reporting.
First paragraph shows this writer is a dunce.
To which I add .... who is ‘David Von Drehle’ and why should anyone give a damn?
I was stuck at home, otherwise I would have too. but I’m impatient and have habits of my heart that are tough to break, I guess.
Trump will get the votes. Lots and lots of votes.
Doesn’t own my vote: GO CRUZ!
However I think I'm going to go buy myself a copy of this as this looks like a great article. Like you, I used to read TIME cover to cover back in the day but the Internet happened. I think I ended my subscription around the time Taylor Swift was getting born.
lol
IOWs you were going to steal a copy of the article on Trump’s the Art of the Steal?
I’ll send you 2 bucks thru Paypal if you swear to vote for Trump.
I will vote for Trump in the general election if he’s the nominee. I thought vote buying was illigal?
Yes, that would have been poetic.
The GOP has been preventing us from electing anyone who would stop the illegal alien inundation.
Trump has the money to bypass all of their usual blockades.
The voters have been wanting a fence/wall and enforcement for years. The GOP (owned by The Cheap Labor Express) has been working to make sure we could not get either.
Trump seems very pleased with it!
It IS good!
Trump is tearing through & exposing the strongholds!
Trump: Trust no one!
It is....I’ll send you $5 if you vote for Trump during the Primary.... :0)
Screw that, thanks for the offer friend.
It would have been nice if you had taken 30 seconds to run the excerpt though this first, we all could read it.
