I have always greatly enjoyed this site, so please believe that I ask this with respect: did you vote for Romney?
I understand that is a rather personal question, and certainly understand if you tell me “none-of-your-business”; let’s call it rhetorical.
I mention it, because I want you to know that I did not vote for Romney. I felt the establishment had pushed me too far and I couldn’t vote for a candidate who had been 180 degrees different immediately before running. So I wrote in a conservative name and voted Republican the rest of the ballot. This was a conscientious decision. I knew it meant that my potential vote AGAINST Obama was wasted, but I became convicted that you have to live with who you vote FOR, and it is different than who you vote against. I felt that I would rather lose the short-term battle than have a standard-bearer for Republicanism that drove our name through the mud and clouded the public view of conservatism for a generation.
So flash forward to 2016. I am struggling with a different set of circumstances, but a similar choice. I certainly don’t think Trump is an establishment candidate by any means, yet his position flip-flops are no less troubling than Romney’s, and his conduct is, in my opinion, disgraceful.
I am definitely not thrilled with any alternatives, and I swear I am not a complete purist... I have held my nose and voted for very flawed Republicans. I just think the better of two evils argument has its limits. For me, Trump is too far. I am more of a conservative than a populist, and see Trump as a flexible populist with consistent authoritarian tendencies.
I am not trying to convince you to become a nevertrumper, but I do take exception to an assertion that the decision to abstain from voting Trump is treason. I know that the loudest voices in that camp are career folks who benefit from the establishment status quo, but there are those of us who are not that way.
It’s your site Jim. I respect that. I just hope there is room for those of is who feel Trump is not a sincere conservative.
Not just some. ALL.
That should tell you something about what he represents.
Did I mention ALL?
Yes I voted for Romney. And urged all FReepers and lurkers to do likewise. Ran a thread on it soon after he got the nomination.
If you start urging people not to vote for Trump if he gets the nomination, we’re done.
I guess I'm for Trump because I think its already gone and he is the only one literally shouting about how Christians around the world are being slaughtered by Muslims meanwhile Red/Blue team establishment tells me I need to look inside and get back to work and voting for them.
Sorry I'm tired of lying d-bags I think anybody who wants to know, understands what Trump is about and his agenda. Borders, Culture, Strength, Free Entreprise,
Common frickin sense
Quite Frankly none of these people (political/pundit) class deserve any better than kick in nuts Donald Trump is administering
Once again thank you for the post and the tone. I will do more in the future to tone it down a notch. We are just all so frustrated to watch this wonderful nation be destroyed and don't know what to do
