This article covered assault weapons specifically, but I still believe wholeheartedly that the much broader problem with gun violence requires us to heavily fund mental healthcare in this country, and with deep pockets. A majority of all gun deaths are still suicides, or murder-suicides. While we must do something to prevent the string of massacres we’ve seen with assault rifles over the past few years, we’d be sorely mistaken not to address the grave mental health problem in our country. This is a separate issue from domestic terrorism, but is definitely where this discussion needs to go.

It is a semi-auto and it is excellent for assaulting..... squirrels.

I was quoting an “expert” interviewed earlier this week.
It’s not just mental health that’s the issue. It’s a particular intersection between mental health and the media. These mass shooters are after one thing: attention. They’ve decided to commit suicide but want to call attention to themselves as they are doing it. Thus Columbine killers made a video in which they stated that people would not be able to ignore them now. The batman killer dressed up like the joker a me shot up a theater with an assault rifle. It’s all planned to get as much attention as possible. The Connecticut killer one upped the batman killer. He shot up a Kindergarten. Why? Because he knew that the more outrageous his actions the more attention he’d get. He used an assault rifle because he knew it would get hm more attention. The Orlando killer called 911 to make sure they knew what he was doing. He texted his wife to see if his plan to get attention was working. He posted to Facebook while he was doing it. It was all about getting attention. Deny these miscreants the attention they want and the killings will stop.

Since guns and ammo are so popular, why don’t governments just tax the sh!t out of them, say $200 per gun and $5 per round?
If you used the Assault Weapons Ban of 1994....it went and identified models by name, and then had this odd add-on:
If you had a weapon which had two (any particular two) of these items below and accepting detachable magazines....you were banned:
- Folding or telescoping stock
- Pistol grip
- Bayonet mount
- Flash suppressor, or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a launcher mount
As long as you only had one of these features....you were OK.
They have no intention of ever “confiscating” firearms. They just want the law. Every encounter with LE will go like this, “Sir, you failed to signal (or whatever) back there and the computer tells me you are on the list for a record of dangerous, bigoted, racist remarks you have posted on a website called (sneering) FreeRepublic. We have found most of you dipshits have firearms so I am placing you under arrest. Exit the vehicle with both hands in sight (not easy). Oh, you need some help? Oh, sorry about that you must have tripped or something. Well, you can get that nasty gash you got from the door frame looked at after we have torn your house and property apart retrieving those illegal firearms and you have been booked.”
Think I am joking? Civilian disarmament is NEVER the end. There is a whole parade of crap that follows. Re-education camps, home confiscation (to help resettle our new Muslim friends), etc. check China, Cambodia, Vietnam Nam, and on and on.
They have tried.
Oh, I remember too well. At the time we joked about the rash of bayonet murders. There had never been one.
