I’ve been putting it off, but I think I should go try to get some ammo. Just to have around. Is .38 special plentiful, anyone in the know?

Well for bulk loads I recommend freedommunitions, lighter 125-132 grain loads for less recoil compared to 158. One can get new or reloaded rounds from them. Otherwise seems plentiful in shops.
