NFL ratings plunge could spell doom for traditional TV
Washington Post ^ | October 14, 2016 | Drew Harwell and Rick Maese

Football, America’s biggest prime-time powerhouse, has been thrust into a crisis this fall, with dwindling ratings sparking questions over whether it can remain a gold mine for television in an age when more Americans are abandoning traditional TV.

Network executives have long used the National Football League’s live games as a last line of defense against the rapid growth of “cord-cutting” and on-demand viewing upending the industry.

But now, the NFL is seeing its ratings tumble in the same way that the Olympics, awards shows and other live events have, falling more than 10 percent for the first five weeks of the season compared with the first five weeks of last season. A continued slide, executives say, could pose an even bigger danger: If football can’t survive the new age of TV, what can?

We turned it off when the last Superbowl was half homosexual pride and half BLM grand-standing.

The NFL is now basically on the level of reality TV or pro wrestling, all made for TV and with scripted controversy to draw in the rubes. So much money exchanges hands based on NFL games that it’s very hard to believe that outcomes aren’t scripted as well. The game itself is being more and more wussified - I keep expecting Jack Lambert’s suggestion to put a skirt on the quarterback to be fulfilled. So the product was deteriorating rapidly before Kaepernick - he is the straw that broke the camel’s back for many people.

Let’s let the writer of the article know the real reason why viewership is down!!! Some letters to him might get the NFL and owners off their hineys to do something about the PC garbage....here’s mine below

You left out THE most important reason for the decline!! It’s not the election rather the “protests” that have occurred by players. I for one have not watched one game this season due to that fact and the NFL and its refusal to let the Dallas Cowboys honor the slain officers. The NFL needs to address issues such as these.

The players have a right to protest, on their own time. If they protest the way they are then, as I tell my son, there are consequences to our actions. If they feel they are right then bear the consequences of loss of viewership and ratings. In your case as the writer of this article DON’T sugarcoat the main reason why the ratings are down.

Why not offer a poll to see if my reasons are true and/or valid for the drop in ratings.

Let’s see, the NFL prohibited the Cowboys from honoring the 5 slain police officers who died this summer in Dallas. Opening night, the families were honored at center ice with a thunderous ovation by fans and players of the Dallas Stars and visiting Anaheim Ducks.

The sooner we get rid of pro sports, the sooner a large segment of idiots in America can get back to living in reality.

“Not one mention of the traitorous bastards who disrespect the flag.”

That is because the purpose of the article is to cover for the liberals (like the commissioner) who are running the NFL into the ground for their political agenda. They are scrambling to come up with other excuses, to deflect the blame.

The left is fine destroying the NFL if they can not own it.

The NFL was put on probation by me when the players, some of the toughest men in the country, allowed themselves to be suckered into wearing PINK, for a political cause. The BLM crap this year was my final straw. The owners could have (and should have) PUSHED BACK from Day 1, but their consultants convinced them that “this will pass”. It won’t - once the election is over, the people like me will still stay away.

What always amazes me is that they even publish stories making their reporters LOOK SO STUPID. These are not dumb people, they know FULL WELL that the anti-American hi-jinks of the spoiled brats is turning huge numbers of people off, just as it would if they wore Hillary shirts (or even Trump shirts). People (used to) watch and read about sports to get away from politics...now they can’t, so why bother watching? And by the way, Netflix did not appear overnight...it’s been around for years, and if it was stealing audience, one would think that would have gradually showed up in ratings decline, as Netflix grew...but, again, they know that.

Like another pointed out here, it’s like stories about Target saying that ‘bad weather’ is causing their sales decline. If they made me put my name next to stories like that, I’d head straight to trade school and learn welding.

Drew Harwell and Rick Maese of the Washington Post should gather all their elite ‘friends’ in DC and watch football together. I’m sure they can keep the liberal networks going.../s

Then they can go shop at Penneys, Macy, and Target... ‘cause we’re NOT gonna do that either...

Good. I hate the NFL now. My new “hobby” or “sport entertainment” is now car racing.

Boycotting works! I’ve stopped shopping at Target, don’t watch the NFL, and stopped watching most of Fox News.
