The California Department of Water Resources issued a sudden evacuation order shortly before 5 p.m. Sunday for residents near the Oroville Dam in northern California, warning that the dam’s emergency spillway would fail in the next 60 minutes.

The Oroville Dam is the highest in the nation.

Had more than a gut feeling this was bad. Just yesterday they were reporting that there would be no spill-over.

The Grand canyon was wet flood debris when it was cut through.

Roughly 4000 feet deep.

It probably took a week to make the canyon at most.

The little slot at the bottom of the canyon is cut through hard rock and has taken over 3000 years to cut just a few feet.

The dam is from key to key-or, where the dam is cut into the side of the hills. Any part of that breaches then the dams failed.

Doesnt matter how much of the dam remains, it failed if breached at any point of above.

NOPE, that to the left of the EM spillway. There is a parking lot there that is now under water and that part of the dam IS NOT the EM spillway. The water is now running in that area where there is NO reinforced concrete. Only a road.

Go look at prior pictures of the dam before this all started.

BS? Drone monitoring at 20 points is essential right now. Gen Aviation could hit the drones, I was just saying I’m glad there’s a no-fly.

BS?

Isn’t that what is causing the erosion AT the spillway?

Funny you mention that...while we were watching it this afternoon I kept having a sense this wasn’t going as it should. That erosion...

What are you watching? It’s dark now, or almost, right?

Just saw a video on the weather channel. It looks like water is getting under parts of the emergency spillway on the left side. Not good.

If that's the case (undermining the spillway), then it is just about imminent. A good portion of the hill will wash away.

From another thread:

They have what they expect to be an imminent failure of the axillary spillway,” said Mike Smith, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. “What they’re expecting is as much as 30 vertical feet of the top of the spillway could fail and could fail within one to two hours. We don’t know how much water that means, but we do know is that’s potentially 30 feet of depth of Lake Oroville.”

As far as I can tell, the auxillary spillway is to the right of the spillway that had the hole and is now 3x as wide. It is up near the top of the hill. So it sounds like that is expected to fail, and will do an end-around the long spillway in your previous video.

That’s what I’ve been wondering. Will the whole lake go if that spillway fails?
