Does Neil Gorsuch's Liberal Church Matter?
Samuel Smith ^ | 2/10/17 | The Christian Post

Posted on 03/26/2017 6:20:46 PM PDT by johnk

However, multiple reports have pointed out that Gorsuch and his wife attend St. John's, Boulder — a liberal Episcopal church headed by a very liberal, pro-LGBT female rector named Rev. Susan Springer.

Opposition to Gorsuch's affiliation with St. John's was voiced even before he was nominated.

Christian conservative activist and lawyer Andy Schlafly, the son of the late pro-life leader Phyllis Schlafly, voiced his concern over the possible nomination of Gorsuch in an email sent in November with the subject line: "veto these Sup. Ct. nominee candidates."

Schlafly wrote that Gorsuch "probably would NOT be pro-life on the Supreme Court" and included him on his list of "unacceptable nominees."

"Gorsuch's Episcopalian church has declared its 'unequivocal opposition' to pro-life laws and he has said nothing publicly pro-life," Schlafly wrote in the email.

Others, including journalist Julia Duin, who previously wrote for the conservative news outlet The Washington Times, have brought up the issue of Gorsuch's membership at St. John's.

"Think about that for a moment. If this man is the frightening conservative that some on the Left are already alleging him to be, there's no way he'd be Episcopalian, much less at a woman-priested church," Duin wrote. "The Episcopal Church, for anyone who's not been following religion trends in recent decades, has been careening to the theological and cultural left for years and its membership statistics show it. Thousands have left TEC and joined alternative Anglican churches."

"A Google search shows there's an Anglican church in Boulder that the Gorsuch family could be attending if they so desired," she continued. "So, the fact that the judge and his family has remained at St. John's says something."

>> From what I understand Trump is newly saved (last few years) and I don’t think his spiritual discernment is matured. <<

Whereas Trump claims he was "saved" decades ago and became a Christian when he was baptized in a Presbyterian Church as a teenager, is "very proud" of his faith, thinks its a "wonderful thing" and has never waived from it.

Both stories can't be true.

>> Obola sat in Jeremiah Wright's "church" for years claiming to have never heard a word that the good Reverend uttered from the pulpit. And now this. I'd never stay for 5 minutes in a church that featured leftist clergy. IMO we shouldn't be surprised if he becomes the next Soutter. <<

The thing is, if the Gorsuch defenders here SINCERELY believe that where a person chooses to attend church and what kind of pastor they select should carry no weight in determining whether to give them a political office, then don't they owe Barack Obama an apology?

On the face of it, it sounds like Ivanka and Jared made the pick.

Is the church just close to his house, and convenient?

Is it a particularly good one for socializing with the local elite, if you are ambitious?

He might have mundane reasons for attending there.

http://religionnews.com/2017/03/22/neil-gorsuchs-own-faith-is-a-poor-predictor-of-how-he-would-judge-religious-issues/

This link is to all of you on this thread, whether your name is listed or not.

Do some research. His opinions on religious liberty issues are STERLING. There is no argument about it, period.

It’s simple to see what happened to him as far as “church” goes. He attended Oxford among his other academic institutions. While in England at Oxford he became an Anglican instead of the Catholic he was raised. How come?

His wife was born and raised in England and is literally “Church of England” from birth.

I wouldn’t be a member of that group, but I understand why someone raised in England as that, from birth, would.

This is a matter between him and his wife. I would like to see them become members of a version that doesn’t hew the liberal line, but I know people who hew to a liberal church because of its tradition in their families and early lives, who continue in it, but don’t espouse all of its liberal views.

I’m not like that, myself, but some people are.

I do not blame Judge Gorsuch for his choice to be with his wife in a church setting.

I do not believe this informs his views nor will inform his actions on the Supreme Court.

I do believe the evidence is overwhelming that he has called them as he sees them.

The panic-stricken overreach in some of these posts saddens me.

Thanks to those of you who did not go there.

He’s not a social climber just trying to go to church to try to get somewhere in life - which would be bad enough which means the Christian faith is just a social club to him.

He’s a federal appeals court judge who will go to the church that fits his political philosophy, if for no other reason than to associate with people who share it. And if he can regularly sit through the Episcopal liberal service, he can’t sit through an evangelical, Bible-believing one.

“We should be concerned. No doubt. Especially with Schlafly now suddenly dead”

Andy Schafly is not suddenly dead, but is among those who tried to steal his mothers Eagle Forum from under her over her support for Donald Trump.

Realistically, I’d want to know much more before basing a character judgment on someone according to where they go to church. Now if he has claimed this church or its pastor as a mentor (ala Obozo and Rev Wrong) maybe theres something to this.
