That is true, Europeans seek to sound American. There are videos coaching people to sound American on YouTube.
Anicdotally... I was in a pub in Ireland, way-way off the beaten path in County Cavan, a gruff bartender stopped me mid sentence and asked: “...are you an American or some European trying to sound American?”
That question sounds like there was only one acceptable answer in the bartender's mind so I've got to ask how did you respond and what was his reaction? Did he tell you how he would have responded if your answer was the "wrong" answer? Finally, was an extra pint of Guinness involved in the entire interaction?
