Democrat Christine Pellegrino has defeated Republican Thomas Gargiulo in the District 9 State Assembly special election, an upset in a district that Donald Trump won by 23 points in the 2016 presidential race.
With all election districts reporting, unofficial results had Pellegrino ahead of Gargiulo by margins of 3,338-2,282 in Suffolk County and 2,252-1,767 in Nassau County.

They don't want to enact President Trump's agenda. All the GOP Congress wants is all the perks with none of the work.
If the Republican running was a weak establishment guy then the person will not win that election. If the Democrat running in that election attacks both parties (like John Osoff) he will not sound establishment and will win... I think some of these Republican idiots think that if you run against Trump that’s going to help. It isn’t. It will do the opposite. You will look like you are part of the establishment.

The state legislature is a cesspool. Voters know it. Look at that turnout. The letter after the candidate’s name has nothing to do with it. This has nothing to do with Trump and everything to do with the fact that NYS is circling the bowl.

Downstate New York and the Ithaca area are a lost cause.
It is highly unlikely that this portends anything important as a sign of some anti-Trump trend for the 2018 elections.

Can’t speak to the dynamics of the race at play, only that it was an incredibly low turnout (60k voted in November, just 9,600 yesterday. A swing of just 771 votes would’ve seen the Conservative-Republican win here). Unfortunately for this candidate, Thomas Gargiulo, if you type in his name to Google, the first thing that comes up is a whole page of links to a serial killer in Illinois named Michael Thomas Gargiulo (!)
Pellegrino was apparently backed to the hilt by the teachers unions (a comment in one article alleged she was given $200k by them and also has a $200k tax lien against her by the IRS for not paying her taxes).
Mixed bag yesterday with the GOP winning a Dem NH State House seat and Dems winning a Republican one.
