I've been using a host file replacement more than 15 years, and rarely see popups and even ads on my web pages. The one I use is

It sends hundreds of thousands of ad sites to 127.0.0.1.

Hmmm. Only thing I get is some stupid internet “Broadcaster” thing that slows me down on occasion. Other than that, no pop-ups.
