N.Y. pol says fentanyl kills nearly three times the number of Vegas shooting victims daily(abbrv)

ALBANY - A Staten Island state senator said Thursday that the drug fentanyl kills far more people on average every day than the recent Las Vegas mass shooting, yet doesn't generate nearly the same outrage.

Sen. Andrew Lanza made the comments at a Staten Island event with Gov. Cuomo to push a bill to crack down on the makers of the deadly drug.

“Recently we watched in horror the Las Vegas shooting in which 59 of our fellow citizens lost their lives,” Lanza said. “It was described as America’s worst mass murder, but if you look at the math, it’s not true.”

While 58 people were killed in the recent Vegas shooting, an average of 160 Americans die every day from fentanyl overdoses, Lanza, a Republican, said.

“We saw after Vegas people screaming and yelling to do everything to call for martial law to throwing the bill of rights into the shredder,” he said of a push for new gun control measures.

“Where is the same outrage here?” Lanza said. “Where is it? Perhaps because this problem doesn’t fit neatly within the political narrative of the left. It doesn’t fit neatly within the political narrative of the right, and so we don’t hear enough.”

He said fentanyl is to heroin as bump fire stocks are to weapons “and we’ve got to stop it right now.”

Lanza, along with Assemblyman Michael Cusick (D-Staten Island), is sponsoring a bill pushed by Cuomo that would add 11 types of fentanyl to the state controlled substance list.

“I have no compassion and no tolerance for the manufacturers,” Cuomo said at the event.

He said the state’s efforts to crack down on the drug are made difficult by the fact that every time a compound is outlawed, the drug makers add something new to get around the law.

“It's a game of whackamole,” Cuomo said. “We are a dog chasing its tail and we want to end that.”

“I have no compassion and no tolerance for the manufacturers,” Cuomo said at the event.

Cuomo said he will propose a bill to add 35 types of synthetic marijuana known as K2 to the state controlled substances list, exposing those who make them to criminal drug penalties.

The 35 types are already illegal under federal law. Cuomo’s legislation will give the state health commissioner the power to add to the list any new drugs that have been added to the federal list of controlled substances.

The bills could also include a provision outlawing specific chemical formulas or any derivative from those formulas.

While overdose deaths in the state involving opioids increased nearly 35% between 2015 and 2016, the number is significantly higher for fentanyl-related deaths.

The Cuomo administration says that fentanyl-related deaths increased 160% between 2015 and 2016, including more than 310% in New York City. In Staten Island, fentanyl-related deaths jumped closer to 700%, he said.

The state recently sent a letter to insurance companies telling them they must cover anti-overdose drugs related to the use of fentanyl.

Why of course it does, and blacks kill far more blacks than white people do and vice versa. Bad and drunk drivers kill more than everything combined.

Let's not start talking about facts. You don't want to go there.

Let the weak-minded become addicted to fentanyl, meth and crack cocaine and we can cull the heard.

Fewer self-selecting, weak-minded Americans make for a stronger America.

Don't know if this pol understands this but Fentanyl has a legitimate purpose in medicine. It's often used as part of an anesthesia cocktail given before certain procedures.

The problem is with those who distribute it illegally.

There are just shy of 60,000 lethal fentanyl overdoses a year? Color me dubious.

And let’s not forget about Chicago. I suppose it’s how many are killed at one time not across days.

that would add 11 types of fentanyl to the state controlled substance list

Fentanyl is C22H28N2O ∙ C6H8O7. What does he mean, different types? And he wants to attack manufacturers of a medication? How is he knee still attached after all this jerking around?

I assume he means carfentanil, alfentanil, 3-methylfentanil, alpha-methylfentanil, etc, etc.

Over 3,000 are killed in America every day by abortions.

Nary a peep from the media.

Actually, fairly new news is that opiates are now killing more people than either guns or automotive accidents.

“Overall, overdose deaths rose 11 percent last year, to 52,404. By comparison, the number of people who died in car crashes was 37,757, an increase of 12 percent. Gun deaths, including homicides and suicides, totaled 36,252, up 7 percent.” — CDC data

That is correct. What’s the point? Other than another libtard useless comment?

guns nor opiates "kill" people....people using guns wrongly or evilly or who use opiates wrongly are dying....

stop human nature first .....objects and chemicals do nothing on their own...

its not like opiates are just jumping into someone's mouth or nose....

Per CDC about 675 die per day from Sepsis...and many of those are Negligent Homicide. Person goes in for non-life threatening pneumonia, or non-life threatening gun shot wound, or non-life threatening broken arm and dies of Sepsis.

Sometimes Sepsis is put as the cause of death. Sometimes the non-life threatening condition is put as cause of death. Depends on who has the best lawyers.

A suicide is sad and painful for family and loved ones but it does not elicit rage in the way a murder does. Those killed in Las Vegas did not participate in their demise.
