Mueller is running amok
The Week ^ | 31 October 2017 | Matthew Walther

After months of getting themselves worked up about hearings featuring a hero once accused of rigging the election for Donald Trump and Don Jr.'s inability to sniff out Nigerian prince emails, spectators of the Russia game have finally gotten what they wanted: indictments.

Unfortunately, the indictments of former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort and his business partner Richard Gates have nothing whatever to do with "collusion," however broadly defined. Politically speaking, we have learned nothing except what we already knew: namely, that a shady businessman who briefly worked for the Trump campaign is, in fact, a very shady businessman indeed, one who has just pled not guilty to failing to register as a foreign agent on behalf of the Ukrainian puppet government and not declaring all of his income derived from his essentially pro-Kremlin lobbying.

Something to watch for: Calls from various sides (especially never-Trump ones) for this investigation to be shut down. Seems a little suspicious to get these calls as the direction begins to turn toward the Podestas and the Clinton campaign...

The dems are all over the map on this one.

Some of them want Mueller shut down now (because it’s pointing towards hilLIARy) and some of them think that this proves it goes all the way to the top up to Trump (because it’s pointing to ...er...hilLIARy)

Very well spoken.

I assume you’re referring to the DNC chair with your reference to Dems thinking the rot goes all the way up, and the impression I got from that story was that The DNC chair is basing that declaration on Manafort having a brief involvement with the Trump campaign, while ignoring that the actual indictment is for activities that took place long before, when Manafort was entangled with various Hillary enablers.

On a side-note, I worked briefly with a group of Northeastern Libs, who were so in the tank for Hillary that during the initial stages of the post-election “Russia collusion” furor, they didn’t even want to continue discussing the topic if something got brought up that contradicted their head-script e.g. there were never 17 intelligence agencies looking into possible collusion. Those are the kind of people who are going to accept the DNC chair’s declaration as gospel, and will go full-on “LALALAICAN’THEARYOU” if you point out the actual charges and timeframe of the indictment.

The least Mueller should do is to recuse himself. I wonder how the Bar Assn. would deal with a complaint against him?

If a Podestra is indicted the Dems and their bosses in the media will be screaming for Mulehead to be reined in as he is about to Democrats Wheaties bowl. They will become even more hysterical.

What is so unfortunate about there being no evidence that the President has nothing to do with any of this nonsense? Isn't the point of investigation to get to the truth, regardless of where it lands?

Remember when Comey was fired, and Colbert's audience hadn't been told how to think? He chastised them and introduced 2 minutes of damage control.

Same deal here....the enemy hasn't any clue how to respond yet, so they're all over the map (as you so eloquently put it). Let them flop around and enjoy the theater.

Best. Election. EVER.

There is no crime of “collusion” ... only conspiracy. Why are they looking for a “collusion crime?”

That's not the point of THIS investigation.

It started as a "get Trump" investigation. I think Mueller has realized he's in an extra-Constitutional position where top leaders of both parties will defend him against any limitations on his authority, including the Constitution (e.g. the 4th amendment).

And he will use that to go where ever he wants. There is no point to the investigation any longer except what Mueller wants to do today. Probably needs to capture some Ds to keep Rs from shutting him down. But Trump-Russia is only an excuse for him keeping power, no longer a point of investigation. And no individual (AG) or group (congress) can keep him on point since they have (to this point) ceeded any oversight authority (which he is well aware of).

I think he realizes he's in a "do or die" position now. Either he succeeds in bringing the Trump administration down, or he himself will be vulnerable for his own criminal history. He has everything to lose by failing to push forward, so I think he will throw all caution to the wind and get away with everything he can.

I think most in Congress/Senate feel the same way... most all (it not all) of them want a return to their cozy Uniparty government. They all probably have plenty of skeletons in their closets they would rather keep there.
