Trump backs bipartisan fixes to ObamaCare markets
The Hill ^ | 11/28/2017 | Jessie Hellmann

President Trump told Republican senators Tuesday he supports two bipartisan efforts to stabilize ObamaCare's insurance markets.

Trump, during a luncheon on Capitol Hill, said he supports a bill proposed by Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-Tenn.) and Patty Murray (D-Wash.), that would continue key ObamaCare insurer payments.

He also said he supports a bill proposed by Sens. Susan Collins (R-Maine) and Bill Nelson (D-Fla.) that would set up a reinsurance fund to help insurers cover higher-cost individuals.

"He said he supports Alexander-Murray. He said, more importantly, he supports Collins-Nelson... which has widespread bipartisan support," Alexander told reporters after the lunch.

Collins, who has opposed the GOP Senate tax bill's repeal of ObamaCare's individual mandate, has met with the president in recent days about her concerns.

Asked if she were feeling more optimistic about the tax reform bill, she said: "That is a fair assessment because I believe a lot of my concerns it appears are going to be addressed."

Collins said Trump understands the "need to have something to offset the premium increases" that would occur from repealing the individual mandate and "appeared very open to the combination of Alexander-Murray and Collins-Nelson."

Collins said she, GOP leadership and members of the Finance Committee also met Tuesday to talk about passing the two proposals.

Can anyone explain what the Repukes get out of this crap deal? If you’re going to pass this they should get more than just the repeal of the mandate. Hack away at it a bit more before caving in on what promises to be two crappy bills.

Keep Obamacare, get rid of the mandates, let insurance companies compete across state lines to get competition going and let Obamacare eventually die a natural death.

This bill allows for cross state purchases? I highly doubt it. It’s telling that they aren’t discussing the actual details of the bill

Some of us told you guys Trump wasn’t for repeal back in the primary. Instead we just got shut down. God forbid if we also supported Cruz.

Trump’s own words on the campaign tell you he is in favor of some sort of government healthcare plan. With his election all we are doing is arguing who can do it better: Republicans or the democrats. Thus the nanny state continues to grow.

**************

Translation: “Stabilize” means prop up and subsidize.

I didn’t expect Trump to cave so easily. Disappointing.

Alexander Murray is basically a bill to make Obama’s executive order to shore up the insurance exchanges an actual law, after Trump rescinded the (probably illegal) Obama ex-order.

So Trump supports a policy he undid by executive order himself.

Actually, Section 1333 of Obamacare allows states to pass laws allowing purchases across state lines. Five states have done so. So far, not one insurance company has taken up the opportunity. The truth is that insurance companies have very little interest in negotiating the hospital deals and setting up the PPO networks necessary to operate in a new state.

Trump thinks he can get these people to support him on other issues. He’s going to find out he’s wrong.
