They should just spend the night in a hotel. I had weather problems flying through Atlanta a few years ago and I actually ended up making a quick reservation and then walking to the nearest hotel (this was pre-Uber) which wasnt very far away. I actually had a lovely evening and went to a nearby bar that had some great people playing and singing and also a very convivial crowd of stranded guests.
So when life gives you a lemon ....well, you know the rest of it. But dont make your family drive for hours through the night to pick you up unless its absolutely, positively necessary (like the world is coming to an end and Atlanta is where its starting).

I don’t know how many years ago that was for you,
but there are no hotels in walking distance from the Atlanta airport today.
Well they are all adults so I am out of the decision making loop. Had I been asked to go get her, I would have suggested she call some friends in Atlanta. She did say there are no rental cars available.
I was asked to try to get the luggage re-routed and had no success. According to the luggage tracker her luggage is still sitting on the plane from Bhm. To call an agent, it is something like a 90 minute hold time. She is going to handle it in the morning.
Apparently there is not a room left in Atlanta .
