The Racist Subtext Of Philly's Ban On Convenience Store Protective Glass Barriers
American Thinker ^ | 12-19-2017 | Thomas Lifson

Shopkeepers in Philadelphia's neighborhood convenience stores that serve food and beverages, locally referred to as "beer delis," face a legal prohibition on the thick glass barriers around cashiers that protect them from stickup artists wielding guns, knives, and other weapons. Because the shopkeepers predominately are Asian, and the customers (and robbers) are mostly black, this imbroglio looks a lot like a racist quest for vengeance against a commercially successful minority group.(Koreans)

Julie Shaw of the Philadelphia Inquirer provides the details:

Despite strong opposition from Asian American beer deli owners and their supporters, Philadelphia City Council voted, 14-3, Thursday to approve a bill that most members said would enhance neighborhoods, but that the merchants fear could jeopardize their safety and livelihood.

Mayor Kenney's office said he would sign the bill.

City Councilwoman Cindy Bass introduced the bill Nov. 2 as part of an effort to rid the city of what she has called illegal stop-and-go outlets. Although much of the bill involves categorizing food establishments by size for city licensing purposes, one paragraph generated huge protests and polarized communities, exposing fissures involving race, class, and perceptions of immigrants.

That paragraph called for banning bullet-resistant windows in large food establishments. Beer deli owners were affected because state law requires them to have at least 30 seats. Many of the owners, who are largely Asian American, decried the bill, saying removing the safety windows would expose them to being robbed, injured, or killed. But Bass called such windows, which separate food servers from customers, "an indignity."

As heavily hit as some of those stores get hit, no way I’d work there without the glass. Moot point I guess, no way I’d work there.

As I understand it, the real subtext is that they think these kinds of stores attract undesirables and criminals, and would prefer not to have them. A lot of them are centers of illegal activity, where people can get drugs and bootleg cigarettes, and launder money.

Block the windows up with steel plate and make transactions with two-way cameras.

Pass the money and the purchased items back and forth through a sliding drawer.

If it doesn’t fit in the drawer you can’t buy it.

Well we know what happens next. Those protective shields were there for a reason. It cost money to install them. Idiots.

Is not being killed in a robbery an ‘indignity’?

You're right. There were many stores in North Philadelphia prior to the 1964 riots and those store owners decided not to rebuild.

No doubt the same immunity that protects cops will protect the city if some shop owner gets killed.

Reason 1,100,001 why I don't even visit cites with a feral core. Or any large city for that matter.

You’ve just described every black area of Philly.

The stores are being targeted because they’re run by Asians instead of blacks, which racist blacks hate.

I suspect one will see lots of vending machines in the stores soon.

Convenience store clerk is one of the most dangerous operations in America.

The stores might also go to cash card systems with the cash going into machines run by armored car companies.

“Bass called such windows, which separate food servers from customers, “an indignity.””

Better that the shopkeeper be filled full of holes than that the thug customers feel “indignant” that they can’t fill the shopkeeper full of holes?

What would keep the store owner from stacking 30 stacking chairs on top of each other (or two stacks of 15) and saying he is exempt? Lets get creative here. I am confident that someone can come up with a creative way to circumvent the law.

How dare those Asians want to stay alive and well. Don’t they know that they are there to be targets for black criminals, and that is racist if they don’t present themselves as targets?

“would prefer not to have them”

My friend used to live on Capitol Hill in DC.

The thing that most upset the locals was the discarded alcoholic beverage containers.

The neighbors kept track of license renewal times and the store operators were told to pick up the discards in the store vicinities.

When I went to college in Baltimore, the local alcohol problem was obvious. Recent visits seem to indicate efforts have been made to hide it. The new city problem seems to be vacant housing units in West Baltimore.

the real subtext is that they think these kinds of stores attract undesirables and criminals, and would prefer not to have them.

So the Koreans will close up shop, move to the 'burbs, and sell crap to Whitey. And they won't NEED bulletproof glass. Meanwhile, the ghettoese will bitch, moan, and complain about being in a "food desert". Funny how it works that way.

No, they’ll just end up with “beer deserts”.

While this ban is ridiculous, I have no sympathy for those who harvest our public accistance dollars from our Afro-Gypsy population. Many of these stores proudly proclaim that they accept EBT, and many Asians are busted scamming welfare with the local parasites.
