It’s not Columbus Day in SF anymore — Supes rename for indigenous people

San Francisco’s Board of Supervisors voted Tuesday to remove Christopher Columbus’ name from his commemorative day in October, and instead honor the indigenous people living in California long before it was discovered by European explorers.

The 10-1 vote on the resolution sponsored by Supervisor Malia Cohen elicited cheers and jeers in the board chambers. It came after the board rejected Supervisor Aaron Peskin’s request that it be delayed.

Peskin, the lone dissenter, said he had been snowed with emails from Italian Americans in his district, which includes North Beach — home of Columbus Avenue. Many of them mark Columbus day as part of their own ancestral heritage.

Peskin proposed that the board “try to figure out a path forward” that works for both groups. His colleagues shot down the motion *** in a 7-4 vote, saying that Indigenous People’s Day was long overdue.

I’ve never been to California...and the endless flow of mindless Bull$hit that comes from that place is all the more reason to never go there.

California is no longer the “trendsetter” state it once was, except maybe for other extreme, radical liberals, and illegal foreigners.

SF’s Board of Supervisors should read up on the history of some of the indigenous people. Many of those indigenous people were not as honorable as white-washed history might indicate. Just the mention of certain tribes would send terror through early settlements.

1. A city council can't override a federal holiday.

2. It's extremely lame that "indigenous people" can't get their own day, but must piggy-back on another person's day and whose date of celebration is relevant to something.

“Too Dull to Invent the Wheel Day”

I get your point, but I’ve read that people don’t “invent” the wheel if they don’t have a draft animal to pull the wheeled carts. The largest animal domesticated in the Americas was the llama, which can carry about the same load as a man and is probably a bit harder to train. Roads for men and llamas can be considerably narrower that roads that accommodate carts. I believe the Indians of Mexico did have little wheels on toys.

The dirty little secret about Columbus and the fate of the Indians is that the Indians were doomed as soon as a European set foot on the Americas and returned to Europe to tell the tale. The fact that this happened after the invention of the printing press just made the news travel even faster. And if Columbus had never been born, the Discovery would have been made within 8 years when Pedro Cabral, bound for India, discovered Brazil with pretty much the same crappy outcome for the Indians.

Are the “indigenous people”, celebrated by that holiday, the American born citizens who were here before the invasion of California by the Mexican illegal aliens?

If they’re serious about this, then they should return all Native American lands that now make up San Francisco.

I mean come on folks. Just hand San Francisco over to the Muwekma Ohlone Tribe and whoever can prove they were there before the White man showed up.

They couldn’t run it any worse.

What about inventing the wheel barrel? You don’t need draft animals for those?

Columbus Avenue will obviously have to be replaced with an unpaved path.

San Francisco keeps coming up with more reasons why I should not spend any of my tourist dollars in this craphole of a city.

Mr.President, please build a wall around SF while you’re at it. Thank you.

Good point! But I believe it was invented by the Chinese who just downscaled animal-powered carts to human size. And while the wheelbarrow is a great labor-saving device, the Chinese often had so many humans at hand that they didn’t spend a lot of effort on ‘labor saving’.
