This line of thought is akin to a man steals a car. That car thief then gives his daughter the car. She doesn't know that the car is stolen.
The police find the car, but the girl says that the car can't be returned to the person from whom it was stolen, because she didn't know it was stolen.
If Pelosi were in charge, the girl would get to keep the stolen car, and would keep the father from being arrested and charged with "Grand Theft Auto," since that would "break up a family!"
