Florida Dem vows to introduce assault weapons ban in Congress next week

Rep. Ted Deutch (D-Fla.) on Wednesday said he intends to introduce legislation next week to ban assault weapons.

Ryan Schachter, a student at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School whose brother was killed in last week’s shooting there, asked Deutch during a CNN town hall event what he would do to ensure he will be safe at school.

“We’re going to introduce legislation to make sure that assault weapons are illegal in every part of this country,” Deutch said, prompting applause from the audience. Deutch was referring to legislation from Rep. David Cicilline (D-R.I.) that has dozens of Democratic cosponsors.

He said he supports local law enforcement and school staff to provide as much security and comfort as needed to make sure students feel safe.

"But beyond that, the best way for us to show that is to take action in Washington, in Tallahassee, to get these weapons of war off of our streets," Deutch said.

Students at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Fla., have spoken out in recent days after a gunman opened fire in their school on Feb. 14. The students have called on lawmakers to enact legislation that would curb gun violence and prevent school shootings.

Some have called for a ban on assault weapons after an AR-15 was used in last week's shooting and several previous mass shootings.

Other lawmakers have proposed raising the minimum age requirement to purchase certain firearms. Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) expressed support Wednesday for such a proposal.

The White House hosted a listening session earlier Wednesday to gather feedback from parents, students and family members with a connection to past school shootings, including survivors of the Florida shooting.

I’m in favor of raising the age you can own a rifle. If you can’t drink until you’re 21, you can wait 3 years to own a firearm.

But a complete ban on rifles I absolutely oppose; turning millions of law-abiding people into criminals is neither sane nor just policy.

We should keep guns out of the hands of kids, the mentally disturbed and bad guys. The exceptions however, should never be the rule.

Freedom is a fundamental American value.

“This is good , let the Red State Dims that are up for re-election squirm on this ... the Dims are going to make sure our side finally gets energized for the upcoming election ...”

I was going to say that this plan will get as far as Maxine Water’s bill to impeach Trump, which is just off her lips, and no more.

But I like your idea better. Let’s for the Democrats to VOTE on this...make them SWEAT a bit, for once. Throw it up for a vote IMMEDIATELY.

Interesting bio. The picture, of course, sets off my Gaydar...but he has the cover of a female wife, who might even identify as female, along with 3 kids, possibly not even adopted playthings.

But yea - HAVE AT IT, we would JUST LOVE a debate about gun control right before the 2018 elections.

Someone on twitter wrote

12 days till DACA is gone and these idiots are
talking gun control that will never happen.
It’s like waiting for Christmas.

Why are the left not fighting for their voters.

When you come to the age issue....either one admits ‘full’ maturity to be 18, or 21. Across the board....credit cards, booze, cigarettes, voting, buying weapons, etc...should be attached. I can see a reason to raise the full age. Even for the military side of this....write in some waiver that a parent can sign, if under 21.

But if you asked whether this really changes things on future mass shootings, I would have my doubts.

Why did the mother of the Sandy Hook school murderer give her mentally ill son a rifle,,,

I recall that Lanza killed his mother and stole her guns for the massacre.

Actually an AR chambered in its original caliber is a .22. Furthermore, most select fire in 3 round bursts or semi-auto.

Especially with a backdrop of US government agencies working like the East German STASI, to rig the American elections, as was the case with the 2016 election.

Armed with the truth, as Sean Hannity would say, the real intention of the anti-Second Amendment crowd becomes very clear.

Well, Teddy - I just declared my property to be a ‘Sanctuary’ for poor misunderstood AR-15’s, so it appears you’re SOL.

Banning “assault weapons” is just cosmetic since common hunting rifles are identical except in appearance.

This entire narrative is ridiculous.

How about we just resurrect the Clinton era assault weapons ban, figure out why it was repealed and then go from there. Some people just want to keep doing the same thing and expect different results.

I suspect gun control polls are deeply slanted in ways that normal approval rating polls for politicians are not, since politicians want to win elections, whereas the media merely wants to ban and seize guns. However in areas where gun rights are a big thing, even Democrats shrink from gun ban legislation because they understand that media- and gun control movement-generated polls are agenda-driven BS that can cost them their cushy taxpayer-funded sinecures.

Not familiar with any larger rifles though I’ve held an old original AR-15 in Cambodia, an AK47 in So. Vietnam, and and M 16 and PRG at the Grenada exhibit at Andrews Air Force Base in 1983.

I only have an old 1968 Remington 15-LR ramrod rifle for target shooting (I was able to shoot a 1.5” pattern at 75 ft. Did shoot a shotgun at a tree - made it into toothpicks. I’m not a hunter. However, used to shoot .22 cal rifles, single shot, at amusement parks when I was young.

Only time I fired a handgun was when my son, a police officer, took me to an indoor range and lent me his Ruger. I was a pretty good shot at 15-25 feet. Stitched a Bin Laden target vertically from his forehead to his chin in 3 shoots. Most of the others went into his chest.

My daughter can shoot very well, as can my granddaughter. Her husband is a Marine veteran of combat in Kosovo and Iraq. My son is a combat veteran of Iraq, a sharpshooter with an M249. Also a former police officer. Pick a weapon and he has probably fired it either in combat or target practice.
I got a rifle because of the 1968 riots in DC (I lived nearby) and Baltimore, where we had a family store and the mayors of both cities, plus AG Ramsay Clark, did nothing to stop the rioters, arsonists, and looters.

I just wanted to know that I could shoot accurately if there was an emergency to protect my family, friends, or even strangers from the psychos who roam our streets.

Interesting comments on the Falkland Islands war. The Argentinians used FALs (Israeli or Belgian?), while the Brits had “semi automatics only”. Something was wrong with the Brits esp. for those who fought in Vietnam (over 2,000 or more) and knew that automatic rifles were needed for jungle and grassland warfare, as well as some mountain warfare (The Falklands were nothing but a pile of rocks for the most part).

The main point I wanted to make is that most journalists and news talking heads don’t know shit about weapons, period. Lots of them still thought that the old police lead .38s were a good weapon, not realizing that it usually didn’t stop a PCP-crazed assailant unless they were shot in the head or the heart. That is why most PDs went to the .45s or S&W Specials or .357 Magnums. Stopping power.

Thanks for the information. It just goes to show how complicated the “assault rifle” issue is and how it can get screwed up by the media, as well as just by us plain old civilians.

1) Ask these jerks to define what makes a firearm an assault weapon.
2) An AR-15 is NOT an assault weapon and is NOT a weapon of war.
3) An AR-15 is essentially just a .22 semi-auto rifle, which most kids have fired since in their early teen or pre-teen years.
4) The AR-15 fires a .223 bullet, which is only 3 thousandths larger in diameter than the basic .22.
5) Many LEOs and gun experts have said the AR-15 is an excellent home defense weapon.

I personally consider all guns assault weapons. It’s what they are made for. These jack-wagon wannabe brown-shirts can come and take it.

That’s fine . Since an AR anything ain’t an assault weapon....

But these jerks don’t even know what they are trying to outlaw

“Weapons of war?” There are many great natural ways for calming down. Fritz should look into that.
