Dick’s Sporting Goods Sales Sink After New Gun Policy

Dick’s Sporting Goods has suffered a surprisingly steep downturn in sales since promising to sell fewer guns, but the problem isn’t the gun sales, Fortune says.

Stock tumbled to the lowest in four months after the sports store banned assault-style weapons from its Field & Stream stores and raised the minimum age for a customer to buy a firearm from 18 to 21....

“There’s going to be some pushback and we expected that,” said CEO Edward Stack, in an earnings call with Wall Street analysts, according to CNN. “There are going to be the people who don’t shop us anymore for anything.”

The decision is “not going to be positive from a traffic standpoint and a sales standpoint,” Stack predicted.

The company’s shares fell 7.3 percent after going up 13 percent this year. Sales failed to hit the projected $2.74 billion, tapering off at $2.66 billion for this quarter.

Camping World for one. Their CEO told customers to shop elsewhere if they support Trump. I haven’t heard anything more about their sales, but that SJW CEO has sure been quiet.

“All for ripping DSG for their moral preeening in guns but this sales drop has nothing to do with it.”

That’s the claim but I’m sure that some of their sales drop in other areas is due to Second Amendment supporters no longer buying other items there as well.

Just had a brand new Dick/Field & Stream store open here. Gave up on Dicks years ago when they began avoiding semiauto and handgun ammo. Now the Field and Stream is a great store, but with the banning of these weapons they will see these stores fail in a few years.

So Dick’s sales suffer erectile dysfunction?

The upside is Mr Stack will be a hero at his country club and get invited to all the right parties. He is a billionaire who inherited Dick's and lives in an extremely upscale community full of business managers and tycoons outside of Pittsburgh. In short he is a guy with absolutely nothing in common with his customers and likely despises them. One of the problems with inherited wealth is that the inheritor rarely has the brains, good sense, values, and work ethic of the person that created the wealth.

Dick’s Sporting Goods is going down the same road as Kmart. I hope they wake up before they reach the same end.

Even if they began giving guns away, I would hope no one with any character would go get them. Let them go OUT of business for the decision they made.

Could be but not in the quarter mentioned. It’s just too soon to have a material impact. It will in future quarters.
