As U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers swept across Northern California earlier this year, arresting more than 150 undocumented immigrants, the Bay Area restaurant industry watched closely.
Everyone is fearing a day that ICE could show up at their doors, said Gwyneth Borden, executive director of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association.
For restaurateurs and their staff, its more than just speculative anxiety. During the past several months, numerous food businesses in the region have received a notice of inspection from the agency, though no raids have been reported.
Such notices require that a business owner provide employment eligibility verification, known as I-9 forms, for both current employees and former employees who worked for the business within the past three years. Once a notice is received, business owners have three days to produce the forms, which they are legally obliged to possess, according to the ICE website.
According to the Pew Research Center, undocumented immigrants account for 11 percent of the countrys restaurant and bar workforce, a percentage that translates to around 1.3 million people.
Ramirez of Don Ramons said the palpable fear is reminiscent of the 1960s. Back then (ICE) would just walk onto your premises, she said. Nobody knew they had rights.

If I lived in SF (doubt I could stay but anyway) I would get an ICE cap and shirt and just buzz restaurants up and down Powell, Mason and Kearny.
I thought they’d be on alert for their waiters serving drinks with *plastic* straws. ;)
Then hire legal Americans from any point of origin and don’t worry.
Have ICE on speed dial to give them information.
Good. Keep them on edge while you raid other places. Then when they least expect it . . .
From a Beaner “restauranteur:”
“The key, she said, is for employers to understand the law and the rights of their employees. We as employers have to be ready, she said. You have to be ready for anything.
She needs to understand that all of her illegal workers have absolutely no rights. As for “being ready,” she needs to be ready to face charges for hiring people who are in this country illegally as well as watching some of her workers get cuffed and hauled away.
she really likes that slave-labor.
ICE agents should arrest & putt in tje psddy wagon not only the illegals highed, but the ?????citizen????, that employed them.
psst...San Jose
.... OMG ..... Now who's gonna wash the dishes??? The Bay Area may have to issue a major state of emergency!!
Would that be impersonating an officer?
Hmmmmm, so can we assume all of these migrants are being paid $15/hr?
They're so afraid. Yeah, sure. That's why they have their picture in the paper every day bragging they're illegal. That's why they stage Mexican protests marches down Main St. in broad daylight. That's why they hang out at Home Depot and Mexican restaurants. That's why they brazenly are at the front of the line for government freebies. That's why they send their kids to public school and get them signed up for free lunches. That's why they're hiding in the shadows... oh, wait, they aren't hiding in the shadows or the least bit scared of ICE.
ICE is a joke. They can’t find an illegal at a Mexican protest march.
Having a to rely on a joke isn’t good. But the Left doesn’t even want us to have a joke, which is worse.

The only employees who need fear an ICE raid are those who are in the US illegally.
They should send teams of 3 or 4 ICE vehicles into SF and stop in front of restaurants get out stretch the legs for a minute of two then get back in go to another restaurant and do it again.
Keep it up until the illegals get used to it then do a few raids.
rinse, repeat, rinse, repeat . . .
