Putin, Xi to Meet in China as Trump's North Korea Summit Looms

Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet Chinese counterpart Xi Jinping for the first time this year, with the looming U.S.-North Korea summit and the Iran nuclear deal expected to dominate their agenda.

Both China and Russia want to ensure hostilities don’t break out on their border with North Korea, disrupting the region’s economy, creating humanitarian disasters and possibly bringing U.S. troops closer. Kim has met Xi twice since Trump first agreed in March to attend the summit. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov visited Pyongyang last week and delivered Kim a message from Putin.

“China and Russia have common interests in regards to the resolution of the Korean crisis,” said Alexey Muraviev , a Russia strategic and defense affairs specialist at Curtin University in Perth, Australia. “Their pragmatism is driven by the belief that it is better to have the regime that is in place rather than hope for another one.”

Discussion on “solving the Korean Peninsula’s nuclear problem” must involve the lifting of sanctions on North Korea, Lavrov told his North Korean counterpart Ri Yong Ho before meeting Kim, Russia’s state-run Tass news service reported. “It is impossible in one move to ensure denuclearization; that’s why certainly there should be some stages,” Lavrov said.

Sure...China is #2 biggest economy, Russia is not even in top 10.

The dwarf meets the jelly bean giant.

Thanks. I’m part-Korean and this would mean a lot to me. I only trust the U.S. (led by the likes of Trump, Pompeo) to oversee this process. So I pray God contains and pushes back against the evil motives of other leaders and governments seeking to involve themselves.

POTUS is leaving G7 early, skipping the global warming part of conference. He is suppose to go to Singapore. Hmmm? Wondering if he will meet with Xi & Putin. That meeting would be historic!

Hi Lopeover, that would be interesting but at this temporary moment in history there is very little to distinguish the G7 and Xi/Putin. Both gatherings are designed to combat “America First.”

Xi/Putin also want to keep Paris Climate Accord and Iran Nuke Deal for starters. And THEIR goals for North Korea I assure you are not ours.

In the first place, Yahoo is not a credible news source.

Anyone can write for Yahoo, including your gardener, the guy who delivers pizza and a bum crapping on the street in San Francisco.

Yahoo pays these morons who write for Yahoo one-quarter penny for each hit up to 1,000 hits. That’s $2.50 for a thousand hits.

So Yahoo scribblers write the most fantastical, outrageous, ridiculous, lying BS in order to get hits and make dollars.

When you hit the link the source is ultimately Bloomberg. Xi facilitated the meeting with Kim and Trump. Why wouldn’t Putin meet with Trump? Putin has been much maligned in US leftist media. Russia is also quite Nationalist.

All your points are cogent.

Hi sargeantdave,

True. But not here. Please also see my thread (not from Yahoo) about the Assad family’s history with North Korea’s Kim Il Sung dynasty. Assad is set to visit North Korea. Russia also ties into that and one can see the world picture a bit clearer and more long-range.
