BROWNSVILLE, Tex. — In the loading docks, children sat in a darkened auditorium watching the animated movie “Moana.”
Where there were once racks of clothes and aisles of appliances, there were now spotless dorm-style bedrooms with neatly made beds and Pokemon posters on the walls. The back parking lots were now makeshift soccer fields and volleyball courts. The McDonald’s was now the cafeteria. All this made it difficult to visualize what the sprawling facility used to be — a former Walmart Supercenter.
The converted retail store at the southern tip of Texas has become the largest licensed migrant children’s shelter in the country — a warehouse for nearly 1,500 boys aged 10 to 17 who were caught illegally crossing the border.
The teeming, 250,000-square-foot facility is a model of border life in Trump-era America, part of a growing industry of detention centers and shelters as federal authorities scramble to comply with the president’s order to end “catch and release” of migrants illegally entering the country. Now that children are often being separated from their parents, this facility has had to obtain a waiver from the state to expand its capacity.
Cots are being added to sleeping areas. The staff is expanding. But even that is not enough. Federal authorities are considering establishing tent cities on Army and Air Force bases, and have already transferred hundreds of immigrant detainees to temporary housing at federal prisons.
On Thursday, the Department of Health and Human Services announced that temporary tent housing would be set up near the border station in Tornillo, Tex., to house up to 360 youths. That prompted an angry response from a Democratic state senator, José Rodríguez, who noted that temperatures could be expected to exceed 100 degrees at the site.

Do the parents have proof these are their kids? Birth certificates etc?

Often the children are not picked up with their family, their parents may already be here illegally and pay a coyote to bring their children. Some send their children up to stay with other relatives and their actual parents are where they came from. Some do come as a family now because during the O administration that was often an excuse to release the whole family- at times depending on the mood.
The first thing that has to be done when minors are detained is to determine who their actual parents and family are. They will lie and say an adult they are traveling with is their mother or aunt when it may be a coyote. The adults of course lie too, so that has to be sorted out. Some of the children are actually being trafficked for prostitution and they are in fear of telling the truth. Some have to be split up while the determination is made- when their parents are actually located they may be here or in their home country.
The children have to be identified, their parents or other family have to be identified before the decision can be made how they will be processed. They often do not travel the border as a family unit. That is why it is so dishonest to cry about splitting up families. The illegals split families without a thought on a daily basis.
Everyone that supports open borders and illegal immigration is supporting modern day slavery, human trafficking for work and prostitution. That is a fact. The actual illegals are treated horribly by coyotes that smuggle them in; lied to about the reality of the journey, held for ransom, forced or coerced to pack in drugs, robbed, beaten, raped, left in the desert to die if they can’t keep up.
It is claimed it is humanitarian to support this, it is the opposite.
It is a real process to identify the parents and or other family in most cases, large numbers lie about who they are and family connections to the point it must be proven. Once it is determined who is family the minors are usually released to family.
That is a lefty lie that the minors are locked up and the key is thrown away. Every effort is made to determine family units and if possible they are reunited for deportation or to remain here depending on circumstances. Have you heard the number 1500 children that have supposedly been lost? They were reunited with their family and are no longer in communication with our officials- skipped out or hiding. They were not lost...they were released. No way to keep track of them after that.
This country has been dealing with this for years, the issue is the problems increased dramatically during the past several years when all of this was encouraged, and supported.

That is true. The open borders people have trained the illegals to ask for and lie to get asylum. That all has to be legally sorted out. It also has to be legally sorted out who is who and what the family relationships are, because the illegals have been taught to lie about that too.
Illegals have been coached to lie, in order to take advantage of our system. That is what the advocate groups are for, to teach them what lies to tell. Many of the groups that do this are given grant and other federal money for funding.
Consider them a living receptacle for who-knows-what diseases that we don’t need in our country. I don’t see any reason to coddle them or even keep them in this country. Inform the Mexican government that we are transporting them to Point X and leave them there. I resent my tax dollars being used to make it easier on illegal criminal invaders.
