President Donald Trump has spoken with Republican Sen. Mike Lee of Utah as he considers options for a Supreme Court opening.

The telephone call was first reported by the Deseret News. Lee spokesman Conn Carroll confirmed that the two spoke Monday while Lee was in Utah.

Lee's office characterized the conversation as an interview. Asked about the call, White House spokesman Raj Shah said: "Yesterday, the President spoke on the phone with Sen. Mike Lee."

Lee is the only lawmaker on Trump's list of 25 candidates to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, though he has not been viewed as a top contender.

Trump has said he will announce his pick for the court on July 9.

On Monday, Trump interviewed federal appeals judges Raymond Kethledge, Amul Thapar, Brett Kavanaugh and Amy Coney Barrett.

President Trump calls Sen. Mike Lee an ‘outstanding talent’; Lee says White House is talking to him about Supreme Court vacancy — but won’t say if it’s looking at him

I don’t trust Mike Lee after his Benghazi mess and after he called for Trump to step down last August. Nope!

Lee is not a viable nominee at least this time around. He has been quite open in his views on Roe which would unite the Dimocrats and lose us the two moderate female GOP Senators. I like him, but politically I doubt he could be confirmed.

I’m sure the President will find a nominee the Dems will like.

I crack myself up sometimes. Get ready for more poop in the streets is what I meant.

Mike Lee would be a solid Originalist/Constitutionalist court nominee.

I know the giddy Trump groupies will discount him because he was initially a Cruz supporter but he would be a solid conservative justice who would NOT soften over time. He would also be quite confirmable.

I support Trump as much as the next guy but sooner or later the Trump purists are going to have to relent on their distaste of quality people who did not support Trump from day one.

You don’t know that

Point to zany judicial rulings that would give you that awareness. Because of course you can’t

Never Trumper Always Mormon Mike Lee is a definite no

Mike Lee has never come around. He is no better than Mitt Romney. He is free trade and minimum to zero borders. Tell me again how he’s a quality person

Trump will pick someone who has been quietly grinding away a strong judicial record.

Amy Coney Barrett is the one to pick.

Of course I can’t possible “know that” but I am as sure as anything I can’t possibly know for sure.

Mike Lee has been solidly and consistently one of the top 3 most conservative Senators since his first day in office and has refused to bow to liberal/progressive pressure on anything often at the expense of his standing in his own party.

Get that bad tatse out of your mouth concerning his initial adversarial relationship with Trump and look at the man’s legislative track record.

Agree with the first statement but not the second. Murkowski and Collins would be gone immediately and some others from the Republican side would likely follow. I'm not sure that there would be any counter-migration from the other side of the aisle. Ted Cruz and Mike Lee had their own little club and aren't real popular with their colleagues from either side of the aisle.

The entire SCOTUS currently consist of Catholics and Jews... maybe time for a Protestant. Diversity ya know.

I like him too but this is not the time. His vote is needed to confirm and he can’t vote for himself. We can not risk losing a Senator (and don’t bother to tell me we can’t lose the seat, the good people of Utah just sent Mitt Romney to the senate to wreak havoc on President Trump and his agenda)

Besides I am going to enjoy Mitt being the Junior Senator. If Mitt rolls over Mike he would be a poor choice for SCOTUS. We get to see what he’s made of before POTUS nominates him to one of the two seats that will be coming up.

Interesting given that Mike Lee has been quiet as a mouse on the Obama FBI crimes.

Trump is following the Vito Corleone principle: keep your friends close and your enemies closer. There’s no benefit ignoring Lee but Im very, very sure Trump remember his dicking Trump around before the elections...

Why would trump do that? Do you think he likes to waste his time?
