Trump's aluminum tariffs restore a crucial industry and protect American jobs
Washington Times ^ | July 17, 2018 | Jesse Gary & Bob Prusak

As President Trump made clear at the NATO summit with European leaders, “other countries trade barriers” have for years harmed U.S. businesses and hurt American workers while U.S troops have defended their borders. These same countries are now attacking criticizing the U.S. for levying its own tariffs to protect our own national defense.

As some of America’s largest aluminum producers, we strongly support Trump’s leadership on the steel and aluminum tariffs to protect our own national security. Since Trump announced the historic tariffs in March, the American public has been inundated with “sky is falling” rhetoric from entrenched special interests and prognosticators opposing the action.

Several months have now passed since the tariffs were implemented, however, and the reality is quite different from the sour predictions: The American economy is as strong as ever, with unemployment levels at or near all-time lows and capital investment increasing at double digit levels. In fact, manufacturing jobs have increased in each month since the tariffs went into place, including in steel- and aluminum-consuming industries like fabricated metal products, which added 7,000 jobs in June alone.

"Before the president took this historic action, subsidized overproduction by state-owned producers in places like India, Russia, the Middle East, and China had forced smelters across the United States to close and cost over 8,000 American aluminum workers their jobs between 2003 and 2017. This ravaged small, rural communities in America’s heartland and threatened U.S. national security."

Well, the Brits should have no problem. They don’t export aluminum, only aluminium.

At the cost of other jobs. There will be casualties in the trade war, just as there are in any war, and the hope is that our casualties in the form of jobs lost and companies closed are minimized and that job growth and corporate expansion is maximized. Time will tell if we're successful in that.

Letting all our jobs go overseas was a stupid move by greedy corporations. You support that, so FU. Leave the US and go live where you think the jobs should be.

Trump Trade War - Missouri nail manufacturer planning to lay off 250

Missouri Business Lays off in Response to Nail Company

If you honestly think there won't be job losses as a result of the trade war then you need to pull your head out of...the sand and look around. There will be winners in the trade war and there will be losers. Which one outnumbers the other remains to be seen.

There has been a lot of shenanigans with the price of aluminum sick the tariffs were announced. The tariff was 10%. But I’ve been seeing supplier price increases in the 40 to 50% range. And the suppliers will refuse to honor price quotes for more than 24 hours. As a metal fabricator we can’t do business that way.

I don’t fault Trump. But suppliers or speculators are taking advantage.

We always have been in a trade war, and yes we did lose millions of jobs. Our industrial heartland was stripped and the welfare and foodstamp costs were astronomical. We have been bled white.
Obama loved seeing factories move to Latin America, he blocked oil production in our country because he wanted to buy Brazils. He even said that.

So this change is not going from some point of market equilibrium, a point that only exists in the minds of CNN barkers, the US has been under water for a long time, and we have paid much more than these penalties. If anything we are moving to an equilibrium, whether the world likes it or not. Compete freely or do not compete.

The whole construct has been a fiction, and we have been left with the check.

The nail company in the article is Mexican owned and uses Mexican raw materials. It would be a Mexican corporate decision to lay off workers or close rather than seek US suppliers.

Didn’t every American corporation just recieve a 15% cut on total expenses? That should cushion some of a rise in raw materials

Washington Times ^ | July 19, 2016 | Daniel Strauss
Nucor posted the highest second-quarter profit in its history as the steelmaker ramped up output to meet demand from President Trump’s 25 percent tariffs on imports from overseas competitors. The Charlotte, N.C.-based company has benefited as Trump’s duties reduced so-called dumping of illegally subsidized metals in the U.S. from foreign producers, said Chief Executive Officer John Ferriola. China, in particular, has long been criticized for undercutting steel prices, which harms American manufacturers. “The tariffs send a clear message that the U.S. is done asking nicely for compliance with the rules of trade and is serious about demanding changes in the...

You head is already up your butt since you ignore all the job losses we have already sustained.

We tried your globalist ways. It didn’t work.

They have no other buyers and can’t export. Can you wait them out? My sense is their price has to fall

MAGA! I worked at a Kaiser Aluminum smelter in Tacoma, Washington in the mid 70’s. Excellent pay at the time but the hardest, dirtiest, hottest work I have ever done - had to take salt tablets before every shift to prevent muscle cramps.

We have no other choice but to ‘wait’. Out company is the little fish in this fight. My concern is that this is a dispute that won’t be resolved this year or next. There are too many parties involved to wrap this up quickly.
