Nine members of the same family are among the 17 people who died on Thursday night when a duck boat capsized in a Missouri lake.
The family were from Indianapolis, but have not yet been named. Two other members of the family, who were also on the boat, survived.
Bill Asher and his girlfriend Rose Hamman were also identified as among the dead by friends on Facebook on Friday afternoon.
Bill and Rose had been on a week-long holiday in Branson, and had spent their last evening away on the duck boat, friend Mary Ogborn Kientzy said.
Family confirmed the death of grandmother Leslie Dennison, who had been on the boat with her 12-year-old granddaughter Alicia, via Facebook.
Her son Todd told the Kansas City Star on Thursday his daughter, who is recovering in hospital, said she could feel Leslie pushing her up as the boat filled with water.
'She said her grandmother saved her,' he told the paper. Leslie is being mourned as a 'true hero'.
Another five people were killed in the tragic accident, including Robert 'Bob' Williams, 66, who was driving the boat when it went down in Table Rock Lake in Branson.

These vehicles are inspected by DOT (Federal Motor Carrier Safety) and Coast Guard (Vessel Safety Check) on an annual basis. The individual states may require additional inspections, but most will follow the two standards above.
Oh, okay, I get you now. You’re one of those who has to put their nose into everyone elses business; even (or especially) when it’s not wanted.

Agreed, and I find it even worse: There was a Severe T'storm Watch in place, and moreover, in my experience NWS issues a warning AFTER severe conditions are detected. If the operators were "watching" the weather they'd have known one or more storms were in the area at least 40-50 minutes before the boat's location got hit, with a good chance one or more could turn severe. If they had any brains or memory at all the ops would also know these storms in such an environment can quickly become incredibly violent: I've seen "moderate" storms produce a microburst of 80 mph or more B4 NWS could even get a warning out. Ditto for "quick spinup" tornadoes.
Put more simply, I just can't imagine being responsible for 30 lives in a vulnerable situation and not watching for potential trouble like a hawk...
Please explain why a device that keeps one afloat is not wanted in cold water that tends to sap one’s strength and ability to stay afloat....

I always wear a life-vest. Too many people don’t. This is just tragic.
every cruise has a muster drill.
Every time I take passengers on my boat, before we leave the dock, we go through a safety drill. Every passenger is made aware of where the life vests are and how to put them on...women and children first, me last. The men are shown how to tie a line to a cleat, operate the vhf to hail the USCG & read the GPS chart to give out location. I make sure someone knows how to handle the boat in open water, how to expend the ladder and cut the motors to idle. Two people are designated how to put on a fanny pack that contains an inflatable life vest, an EPIRB and handheld VHF radio. This happens before EVERY departure. It might just be me that has a massive heart attack, or fall overboard, so the passengers must be able to handle the situation. Because when it goes bad on a boat is goes bad VERY FAST...SUDDENLY.
If the waves pick up on the way back to the inlet, we put the life vests on. Don’t care if we don’t look cool. A following sea in large waves and incoming tide makes for a potentially dangerous scenario, especially when compounding the scene with other boats with alcohol involved.
Don’t think “so I fall overboard...I’ll swim to safety”
Not if you hit your head and go in the water unconscious! Face down, you drown and sink. In the inlet, it’s dangerous.
The captain in the horrible story is ABSOLUTELY at fault. Not because the winds picked up, but because he didn’t recognize the potential dangers and err on the side of his passenger’s lives. Head they pour in life vests and nothing happened to the boat, EVERY passenger would have commended the captain for caring about their safety and when it went bad he would have saved many lives. The eisenglass should have been immediately unzipped indeed he saw that they were taking on water. Those two steps and everyone should have easily survived.

According to Fox affiliate WXIN, Tia was told that she was told by the boat’s captain, who survived, not to worry about the life jackets.
“My husband would want me to say this — he would want the world to know that on this boat we were on, the captain had told us ‘don’t worry about grabbing the life jackets — you won’t need them’ so nobody grabbed them as we listened to the captain as he told us to stay seated,” Tia Coleman said.

Years ago I purchased my own.Kept it with my beach, fishing and boating stuff.
Went on someone else boat I always knew I was OK
Pappys boat always had enough on board, hanging and readily accessible.

Got snotty out we would put one on.Kinda makes ya feel invincible in rough weather.
If the boat is about to capsize, you don’t want your life vest on because when the boat goes over you’ll get trapped under the boat. That’s what has been said above. Another thing the water wasn’t “cold”. It’s a lake in the middle of July, not the North Atlantic in January.
