Both personalities changed soooo much for the Primaries, I simply have to believe that they unwisely took the advice of some idiot campaign "experts" about the necessity of being "hardcore, down and dirty" during the Primary race ("because everyone else does it!"). Nothing else makes sense. Neither had ever behaved that way before... or since. I was shocked and saddened. I still supported Ted Cruz for the nomination, because his resume was (and is) stellar... but it was with increasing reservations as the Primaries continued.
Hindsight being 20-20, I'm beyond glad that Trump won... but I'm also shocked at the venom spewed daily on FR at the best Limited Government Conservative in all of Congress.
Not much of a Constitutionalist when he ran for President while Canadian.
