The assertion by President Trumps former lawyer that he broke campaign finance laws at the direction of then-candidate Trump could spark calls for impeachment hearings but probably will not have any legal consequences for the president while he is in office, according to legal analysts.
Michael Cohen, who spent a decade as a lawyer for Trump, told a judge Tuesday that he was directed by Trump to coordinate payments to two women designed to prevent them from disclosing alleged affairs with the real estate mogul before the presidential election, in violation of campaign finance law.
Such an explosive assertion against anyone but the president would suggest that a criminal case could be in the offing, but under long-standing legal interpretations by the Justice Department, the president cannot be charged with a crime.
The department produced legal analyses in 1973 and 2000 concluding that the Constitution does not allow for the criminal indictment of a sitting president.
In comments to reporters after Cohen pleaded guilty to eight felony counts in federal court in Manhattan, Deputy U.S. Attorney Robert Khuzami said prosecutors were sending a message that they are unafraid to file charges when campaign finance laws are broken. But he did not mention Trump or offer any indication that his office planned to pursue action against the president.
Likewise, special counsel Robert S. Mueller III determined months ago that allegations of campaign finance violations involving payments to women before the presidential election were outside the scope of his mandate to investigate whether the Trump campaign coordinated with Russias operation to influence the vote.

Yeah since they are calling impeachment over just about everything, from 2 scoops of icecream to this so what else is new?
the new liberal narrative talking point...
This is the first time WaPo readers have heard this news. Bless their little hearts - another day of elation leads to a rough hangover the next day.
There will be no impeachment either over this.
Can you imagine the fun that Team Trump could have with Dems in the house trying to pretend that paying some whore to shut up is a crime? Those jackasses have been doing it for years with OUR money!
It's sleazy and seedy, by both Trump and by the dozens of congressmen who do it, but obviously it's not illegal. Congressmen write the laws.
How can anyone believe anything Cohen says or that he didn't give Trump advice to set him up in the future if he needed to? Cohen has shown us just what a low-life scum bag he is.
It was not a campaign activity. It did not involve campaign money. And the whores started their grifting claims years before the campaign.
Good luck.
Impeachment?
From the people who pay off they sexual harassment victims with tax payer dollars?
I don’t f***ing think so.
The radical left haters include almost everyone on TV. Pres Trump deals with this anger/hatred/vendictiveness... every single day.
Get through this election in Nov.. winning... and then set Washington on it’s ear.. terminate mueller and all of them.. fire them without hesitation.
The President has the power and the right to fire any and all of them. He hasn’t... IMHO He doesn’t want to cause more trouble... but it’s escalated to the point where firing is the only thing left to do to calm the waters and let them know THEY are not the power tip. mueller just keeps going and he will find something is someone, that sets the media going after Trump harder...
All the while leaving the crimes of the past president and ss alone.
Get a strong hold on the rule of law.. stop the witch hunt..
Of course this will backfire. They raided an American citizens lawyers office to get evidence of process crimes against the American citizen. They discover the lawyer committed a crime and are trying to implicate the American citizen. This nonesense occurs after they used the IRS to attack American citizens. This is time to make a stand and fight these demons.
Betting that mad maxine waterspout introduces a resolution for his impeachment before the end of the week.
Could he be talking about campaign staff who thought they were on the short list for a cabinet office? You could refer to that as a “candidate for a federal office.”
